Yeah, I read later that it's due to the cilia in your lungs.
They are little hair-like structures that constantly move stuff from your lungs up for you to cough out. But smoking paralyzes them and clogs them with tar, so everything stays in. That's why smokers tend to be more prone to catching the actual flu.
When you stop smoking, the cilia move all the caked-on tar up for you to cough out

Nice, I am 11 days in myself. I have a ton of energy and I feel much happier. Though I don't even miss it at all. I think when the novelty of feeling happy and healthy wears off I'll probably stop keeping track of how long it's been.

that's normal, happens when you quit weed too, usually takes 6 months to a year for the lungs to recuperate after quitting. if you've smoked for 20+ years there is probably permanent scar tissue that will never fully heal.
