Assuming he's not being ironic, tomatoes are a bad example. You can save a fuckton of money if you grow most of your own tomatoes. But staples like potatoes and corn won't save you as much money.

The lack of basic gardening and cultivation knowledge in the general populace is hilarious. Last year I grew eight indeterminate tomato plants that got around ten feet tall. I saved hundreds of dollars and used the last of them last month for chili (I froze them obviously). I havent bought garlic, kale or tomatoes in years, I've saved thousands.

I guess that's true if that's all you use. I cook all my own meals generally and probably use as many tomatoes as you do in a year in a week sometimes. And yea, if you're not going to go all out it is a waste of money. The only stuff worth growing half assed are herbs.

I just grow herbs, I don't feel like crop plants are worth the effort with my limited skill and resources. A plant or two each of sage, rosemary, thyme, and basil lasts me the whole year usually and the quality greatly surpasses supermarket produce most of the time. I stopped growing coriander because they often die on me or have poor yields and I don't really like dried coriander so I don't get good value out of what I do manage to get.

I've got some janky trellises set up for my raspberries and blackberries. Pruning those is very therepeutic. I planted those along the property line between my yard and the neighboring lot, so that way, I have a fence that gives me food. Just put my first few tomatoes in yesterday and should have more planted within the week. I put in a ten foot row of potatoes and another of onions and another of garlic. Three twelve foot rows of green beans, but none of them have sprouted yet.

As far as seed pots go, my peppers (jalepeño, serrano, banana, and bell) are still not ready to transplant yet. I've got melons in starter pots as well as a few tree seeds I'm experimenting with. Trying to see if I can grow the apples or lemons that I bought at the store from seed. Nothing coming up yet, but I'm a lazy bastard who only got them put into starters in the past week.

i can't believe people can argue that buying shit is cheaper than growing it.

it grows out of the fucking ground it's free. you plant it in free dirt and give it free water from the sky and then just pull the food off.

its free food.

Both is a good option just don't grow dumb shit like bell peppers that taste like ass, have no nutritional value, are ahuge pain to grow, and are worth nothing.

>> No.15926552

Not to mention they're fucking hollow and full of air for some dumb reason, and even the "filling" is garbage you throw out like an overgrown core, you can literally only eat the "rind" and it tastes like ass.
Also they're not even spicy, they're overgrown "peppers" with less heat than basil and taste like sickly sweet garbage and you still grey about as much edible matter as a jalapeno, the texture is godawful raw and slimy cooked, the juice is disgusting either way, constantly added to poverty foods and the actual worst thing plaguing otherwise delicious tex-mex, ruin the texture of a dish just as much as diced onions and tomatoes but without adding any worthwhile flavor, and now they're all over pizzas too because they cost nothing and are worth nothing just fill out orders. At least sawdust adds fiber. Bell peppers are a degenerate filler that don't belong in any food, yet people grow them as "prized produce". The dandelions you pull out of your lawn are five times as foodworthy as bell peppers even with half of their mass being poisonous and all of it tasting bad.

FUCK bell peppers this post was made by lentil gang

This. Especially when it comes to things that you typically only use a little at a time (herbs in particular, also picking a tomato to slice it for hamburgers or whatever). If a recipe calls for some fresh mint, I'm going to the fucking grocery store and buying a bundle of it just for a couple leaves while the rest rots before I even need it again.

let's see.
I've got carrots, bush beans, green onions, mizuna, cilantro, kale, tomatoes, rosemary, and thyme in their pots outside.

I've got peppers, strawberries, eggplant, basil, and asparagus seedlings that are developing and I'm going to wait a little bit before I put them outside.

I've also got seeds for corn, melons, pumpkins, okra, pole beans, and cucumbers. I'll deal with those the weeks to come.

It all depends on where you live and what quality you want to buy. Good quality tomats are unobtainable at US supermarkets so you have to grow them if you want good ones. Or you go to farmers market and spend $8 on 3 tomat.
Greens are becoming very overpriced as well now that so many veganoid retards are folding the market. Doesn’t help that most “plant based” mongoloids are overpaid upper middle class professionals with more money than sense who think it’s normal for a cabbage to cost $12

I have a north facing, covered balcony in my apartment which is close to the worst situation you can get. That being said, I've successfully grown typically sun-loving things like tomatoes, cukes, and peppers, so you're really not that limited.

If space is an issue, like it was for me, aim for plants that you can trellis easily to maximize vertical space. Things like beans, peas, aforementioned tomatoes(smaller varieties like cherry/grape size will do better) where you can direct them towards the most sunlight.

Herbs for sure, especially considering how ridiculously overpriced they are at the typical market.

I would avoid large sprawling plants like zucchini/squash.
