Everybody knows about the lever arm system. With a longer arm, the same load that would be very heavy with a short arm will become easier to manipulate, and this effect will continue to work the longer the arm.
So why in the hell did the f*lks at Lodge decide to give a 3 kilo pan a short as fuck handle? Now, it's not a very heavy pan. It can be operated without too much problem. But it would be such an easy thing to just make the handle a couple of centimeters longer, and it would be a breeze to operate.

The fulcrum is your thumb and finger. You're only applying force with that hand. It doesn't make sense to make the handle longer, as by gripping further back, you're just adding weight to the load end.

The point at which your hand grabs the handle is pretty much the fulcrum. By making the handle longer you're just going to increase the distance of the centre of mass of the pan from the fulcrum.
