Fun fact: back in the 90s, German Federal Railway replaced its dining cars with McDonalds cars on their long-distance lines including their service to Switzerland. The venture, while popular, only lasted a couple years as the Railway found they couldn't afford to run the cars (which cost nearly twice as much to operate as their other dining cars).

This. There's a lot made about the McDonalds in Shrewsbury being 'the oldest in the world' but that's just because most of the town centre dates back to the late medieval/early tudor period. That said there was a strong culture and history in the US, but it was largely swept away in the 1920s onwards in favour of the modern myth of a identityless, cultureless America being the melting pot of the worl.

The quality of American fast food abroad is much higher than it is in America. KFC is probably the most radically different: it's the most shit tier food you can get in America, but abroad, it's actually really decent. McDonalds is the same way. I think the only restaurant that doesn't try abroad is Taco Bell. They just give zero fucks.

It's not really a lower standard of living. They just have less options. You know how you go to a French/Chinese/Thai/Indian/German/Mexican/Korean/Japanese/Vietnamese/Italian/etc restaurant in America 6 days a week, and can be like, "yeah, I like Mexican food, but tonight I feel like bun bo hue"? In all of those countries they eat that exact same food 6 days a week, so having cheap/easy alternatives is still a novelty for them in this current year. That said, they take American fast food much more seriously for that reason, so the quality is usually much better, as it's seen as a treat.

When I was studying abroad i Europe I was telling a few of my European friends that my family would typically eat at McDonald’s 3 to 4 times a week.
They were astonished, most of them saying that it was a luxury for them to eat there, and would do so more if they could afford it.
This was in the Netherlands in 2014.

I didn't really believe how poor Europeans were at first until I started to see pictures of their homes and kitchens. Some of them don't even have refrigerators. Even the poorest Nigs in America have at least two refrigerators in their home to hold all that chicken and watermelon.

It's also rare for them to have a dish washer and if they actually have a clothes washer and dryer its a tiny one in the middle of their kitchen. You would have to go back to the 1940s when most Americans didn't have all those appliances.

Lived in and travelled all around both Europe and the US and this is just not true. Mcdonald's and KFC in the US are for fat people, spics, and niggers, and most people inside the dining rooms are homeless/crazy bc everyone uses the drive thru. In europe on the other hand there aren't really drive thrus and the dining areas are packed with teens and regular people. Mcdonald's and KFC are probably the biggest hangout location for middle/high school aged people in France and Ukraine which is the places I know the best but it's also very popular in the rest of Europe. And even in countries like Sweden where American chains are less popular, the local chains of burger restaurants are identical in pretty much every way except branding.
