The key is necessity.
If I'm in a situation and there is absolutely no other way to survive besides killing an animal, necessity and self preservation demands that I do it.

If I'm in a leisured, wealthy, developed western country with absolutely no need to, why would I go out of my way to cause living on a feeling, thinking being with absolutely no need?

The fertiliser, pesticides etc. are unfortunate by products of industrial farming, population etc. etc. It's impossible to live a normal human life totally free of at least one animal getting fucked, I'm not about to spend my life as an itinerant farming peasant. So I'm not happy with, but can understand the necessity of animal products involved in the production of vegetables.

this argument is always silly though. like saying it about spices too when spices were really expensive and being used by the wealthier members of society who had access to fresher meat. people just like the flavor of it and using these arguments as to why it's bad is just like people starting to dislike spices once the lower classes could afford them.
