I first heard about this as a prize for some competition at a Steampunk festival a coworker attended a few years back.
It's very much in with larping and pronouns circles so that's what people associate it with, and hate it undeservedly.
Maybe it's a bit overpriced, but I think it tastes good and distinct, nice to have another alternative to Captain Morgan and its imitators like Calico Jack etc which all taste the same to me, though I also like that flavor

A combination of drinking spiced rum being a sign that you don't like the unadulterated flavour of rum, and that it is a bad and over priced product at its price range yet gets recommended and shared like crazy driving people away from rum / weakening the relationship between price and quality.

I'd recommend Plantation Original Dark, Red Leg, or Rebellion Bay at that price point.
Or I'd say move to whisky (especially with coke), as Bushmills 10, Glen Moray 12, Johnnie Walker Black / Double Black, Glen Grant The Major's Reserve, Bulleit, Old Virginia 6 are better than even those and some can be had fairly cheaper (and for that matter even generic crap like Jim / Jack / JW Red /WT are better than Kraken).
