Not really, it's mainly a flyover "huwite" mutt thing. At some point in the 50s-60s companies realized that only 50% of the population was cooking (women) which means there's a huge untapped market. After that it was pretty easy to push the notion that it was "manly" because there was open fire (and circumcised American men are well known to be very insecure).

The fact that it lends itself well to non-cuisine like burgers and steak helped a lot too.
