I used to do this several years ago when I was diagnosed with depression. Play video games for 14 hours straight, sleep at 6 AM, wake up at 5 PM, eat at the dining halls, then immediately go back to sleep for another 4 hours and play video games. I would alternate between binge gaming and binge sleeping, and did that for 6 or so months instead of going to class.

I wouldn't have considered myself as "functioning" desu, beyond basically staying alive. Your roommate sounds like me, except I was a sophomore. I never left the shared dorm other than to eat, go to the bathroom, or go to the water fountain.
