What's a good side to go with hamburgers besides fries or onion rings?

Fruit goes pretty well. Grilled pineapple, for instance, especially if you're already grilling.

A nice, refreshing beer. There's nothing better than sitting at an outdoor patio on a summer night with a girl or a couple friends, sipping on a delicious beer, getting a little buzzed before the burger comes and then drinking a second one while you're eating.
It's maximum cozy.

this is the only correct answer. fries/tots/rings are just filler. i'd rather have two burgers..or a burger and a chicken sammich....or a burger and a mcfish

Anything goes OP.
As a miami native, there's always alternative root vegetables and starches. Consider making some pan fried slices of green mariquitas or tostones, or closer to maduro plantains, (buy em frozen) yucca fries, or some of those waffle sweet potato fries, esp boniato.
I like cold sides, something refreshing, like a creamy slaw (or like a kale and nutty superfood slaw). I like to squeeze lime, grate lime zest, cilantro and shredded jalapenos to my southern style creamy slaw dressing. Those easy mode bagged slaw mixes vary from poppyseed to mexican dressings. I particularly like a homemade cold potato salad, like mustardy red skinned potatoes, or eggy mayo based, esp in summer, where I add bacon too, but should be made a day ahead to get truly cold, unless a warm potato salad, german style, which can be made on the spot, esp if you are cooking bacon to top your burger.
From the grilled burger perspective, I will fill up the grill with whatever I can do, from baked potatoes crisped up after microwaving, I might possibly char some whole corn on the cob, hit it with some butter, or even going so far to cut it off the cob and make some mexi-corn with cotija, lime, etc.
If I am grilling, I'll add some balsamic and olive oil marinated slabs of sweet onion at the same time, grilled and sweet. Other grilled veggies, can be quickly chopped and tossed into a nice orzo salad with feta. You can also used those quinoa and other already cooked grains as a salad base.
I sometimes open a can of baked beans, kicking it up a notch with add-ins.
Terra Chips
I like just a tray of roasted new potatoes. They can be steamed very quickly, then given a quick cheesy mornay, esp good with parm and lots of garlic.
