They look at the expensive version and think, "HA! What a sucker I'd have to be to buy that!"

For sure there's examples of things where the cheap kind is just as good as the expensive kind, where the increase in price doesn't guarantee an increase in quality, I would even argue that buying the MOST expensive version of something is usually a bad idea. But almost always, if you see a wide price range for a certain item, at the very least, the ones in the middle range are going to be if not the best option, not far from it.
