I've never really understood what exactly constitutes a 'pudding' or 'pie' in bongland.
Here in burgerland 'pudding' is basically another word for flan, while pie is the classic baked pastry in a dish with filling inside.

The uses of "pudding" by yuros make 0 sense

"Black pudding" and "white pudding" are sausages, so the name must come from the french "boudin noir" et "boudin blanc"

"Yorkshire pudding" is a savory bread made with animal fat

"Figgy pudding" is a sweet cake

"Hasty pudding" is like british grits

Meanwhile you can say "the pudding" to mean "the dessert", so you could eat a meal with black pudding, white pudding, and yorkshire pudding, NONE OF WHICH are "THE pudding"

In the US, "pudding" always refers to a sweet custard thickened with corn starch, similar to italian "boudino"

British people invented this language and it makes no sense

well, as i said, the meaning has gone through many variations over the years. i would rather language be allowed to evolve in the messy ways humans like to play with their meanings than it be kept frozen in time by something like the academie francaise. i know this is just a shitflinging USA vs UK thread but i wouldn't take part in 'do americans really' discourse because language and traditions are rarely made by committee, for the most part we are just born into a world where these things exist and then have to decide how much pride you want to invest in national identity.

i think the highly regional nature of most of those dishes and the naming convention of 'x pudding' makes them fairly easy to tell apart. also i was unfamiliar with 'hasty pudding', apparently it's american.

The etymology of pudding has roots in boudin and middle English word for "meat stuffed/cooked in an animal's stomach". English puddings used to be cooked in a stomach (like haggis) and later on were boiled wrapped up in linen aka a pudding cloth, and more recently steamed in pudding molds.

However what is fairly common is the “chip butty” whereby a brit will butter two slices of white bread, often with ketchup (Heinz of course) as well, and then between those slices place chip shop chips from the night before.
