Honestly, a ton of fish is probably farmed under absolutely disgusting conditions. Or unethically sourced. There's an insane amount of fish fraud. There are a few studies out there that something between 30 and 50% of the fish you get just about anywhere isn't actually the labeled fish.
It's all pretty fucked and it's not getting any better.

old me would have agreed. the first year I moved off campus in college I ate tilapia almost every friday. It was cheap, easy to find, and I really had no complaints with texture or taste... similar to cod really just a bit less fluffy. then I found out why its so cheap. It really is a shit fish man. I stopped eating it, its not worth it. when you get get cleaner, better sourced, healthier, more popular fish for just a few bucks more.

I hate shit like this. I live on the coast right on the SC/NC border. There are seafood restaurants EVERYWHERE, and almost none of them use local fish. There are restaurants within eyesight of the Atlantic ocean and still have fish brought in by commercial food trucks because its cheaper

The taste is off-putting; it definitely isn't as good as cod or haddock. It also has a closed, less fluffy texture. Unlike cod or haddock, you have to cook it with other things to mask the horrible taste. I disliked tilapia before I even knew it was a bottom feeder.
