Thread dedicated to the word food trends, regardless of how long they've lasted or where they were at.

To me it was the slider trend. While it still goes on, it's not nearly as popular as it once was. It's just lazy. Every restaurant was taking an existing dish and putting it on a bun and pretending it was a new item. Crabcake sliders, wonton sliders, pork sliders, pizza sliders, macaroni sliders; I'm pretty sure I saw a stroganoff slider once.

How about the trend of substituting pecorino romano for parmesan in everything? It's one of my favorite cheeses, but it has a strong flavor that can easily overpower dishes where it doesn't belong. Coastal elites seem to have gotten their hands on it a few years ago and for a while they just treated it like "trendy parm"

Ironically enough, if you hate craft beer then blame the traditional brewers who make beers like Budweiser and Heineken.

Craft beer used to be known as microbrews since the production numbers were just so small as compared to the big brewers. But the microbeers proved popular over a long period of time so the major brewers started to emulate them with "craft" brews of their own (with limited success) and then eventually added now-labeled craft beers to their own lines via acquisition (most successfully with Heineken's purchase of Lagunitas).

Of course you can still buy the traditional beers in the stores and at bars so I'm not sure that the craft beer trend really causes any problems for those that don't like them (unlike some food trends where the trend actually displaces/replaces the traditional offering - visit any place that serves salad and you will see the evidence).
