I'm about to move in to an apartment and start cooking for myself. I have virtual no cooking skills right now. I want something I can easily cook cheap but healthy foods. Is pic related a good buy? Rice and beans will be the majority of what I cook. I want to avoid falling into the fast food trap like my friends.

If you're moving into a new place you should focus on getting pots and pans that work with your new kitchen. Considering that you are trying to save money I think you should learn to use the stove first

I always thought Instant Pot was a meme but if you can get one of the base models on sale or for xmas or something they're great.

It's $50 on Target and I'd use the Google Pay promo to get $21 back. so like $35 after tax. I hear they're a bitch to clean tho.

negro what? it's a removable pot, you just take the pot out and wash it, same as any other pot.

They're not bad. What they really excel at is stuff like beans and lentils. Rather than having to soak and simmer them for hours you can just toss them into the pressure cooker for an hour or two and they'll be cooked.

>Rice and beans
Instant Pot is the beans and rice fucking master. 21 minutes low pressure your rice, beans and whatever else veggies you put in there will come out delicious. I do a big pot of 3 cups of rice, 1 can of each black, dark red and light red beans, 2 cans of corn, 2 can of mushrooms 1 big can or regular rotel (drain all of this shit, use beef stock as the liquid you need for pressurization/rice), onion and garlic powder, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper. 21 minutes on low pressure and you're eating like a fucking king for a week. I do 1.5 lbs of 80/20 hamburger on the stove with a healthy dose of taco seasoning. Add that in after the rice and beans are done. I cube up about 20 ounces of sharp cheddar cheese and put it in the beans and rice when I add the hamburger.

I put that mixture in flour tortillas and top with sour cream and fresh jalapeno. I don't get tired of it, it feeds me forever and is dirt fucking cheap. Super food as far as I'm concerned.

you're cooking the rice and beans and vegetables simultaneously? how does it keep from getting all mixed together

It doesn't. It's all mixed together. That's the idea.

A pressure cooker makes cooking rice or beans fast and consistent, and if you leave it sealed then the warming mode keeps your food good for hours. I got one as a Christmas gift last year and it's the appliance I get the most use out of.

The stainless steel pot isn't non-stick. When I get hard shit stuck on mine, I just fill it up halfway with water and set it to pressure cook for ten minutes to soften everything up before scrubbing it if I'm feeling lazy.

The only time I had any difficulty was when I forgot to set it to seal and it ended up burning and I had to scrape it out. Other than that it's no different from any other pot.

Pressure cookers always break for me but this has been pretty good all things considered

do these pressure cooker dealies work as slow cookers/crock pots as well? think i might enjoy slow cooking pot roast and such, but also smashing out a chicken in 40min flat sometimes as well

Modern pressure cookers are very good to have around. Worthwhile to have around in my opinion. Also cheaper to run if wanting to make a 'slow cooked' meal compared to e.g. cooking a stew in a slow cooker or stove top for 8 hours.

I know Instant Pots do. I imagine most if not all of these new style pressure cookers do as well.

Yep, get an instant pot

I'd recommend getting a regular pot and pan, that way you actually learn how to cook and not just press buttons. Anyway rice and beans are really not hard to cook so I find it kinda dumb to get a kitchen appliance that only does that.

An instant pot is not a unitasker my guy.
