is the 15 or 18 the one that is somewhat not priced outside the realm of consideration? Highland Park seems to be going the Macallan direction as far as pricing lately. the 15 is too much over $100 but i think the 18 is $130ish which is Glendronach 18 territory, but i doubt you get the same value considering Glens probably 20 years or older juice.

It arrived.
Nose: Heavy smoke, strong Campbeltown earthy funk, dark/dried fruits, a hint of ash. It fucking reeks in the best way.
Palate: Strong Campbeltown earthy funk, lemon, light fruits, brine. Doesn't burn nearly as much as you'd expect for the ABV. Thick, velvety mouthfeel
Finish: Smoke and oak.
I'm not great at picking out or describing individual flavors; there's a LOT more going on here than I can describe. I can't even begin to comprehend this on first tasting.
It's kind of like Longrow with the smoke turned up to 11 and the Campbeltown funk turned up to 15; a supremely characterful, interesting flavor bomb. Those of you who have had Springbank or Longrow will know what I mean by Campbeltown funk; it's a unique funk and it's much louder here than in the Springbank distillery releases I've had.
I can't stop sipping this. I don't think I'll have a firm grasp of this until at least halfway through the bottle.
In b4 I'm quoted alongside a neckbearded Wojak.

Again, I'm not great at describing flavors. Peated Campbeltown whiskies have a different sort of peat funk than Islay whiskies and it's quite distinct. It's less vegetal/seaweedy and more earthy. There's a barnyard quality to it someone reminiscent of a Brettanomyces beer like a lambic, and there's an oiliness to it.

I am fully aware of the Taliskee hatred on this general but let me tell you my story.

I went to Vienna to apply to a university about 6 years ago and I was staying with my friend at his apartment and his roommate had a very large whiskey collection of half drank opened bottles which were just in the living room on the floor.
Unfortunately I got sick so I had some hot tea and I was looking for some whiskey to drink with my tea, so I randomly picked bottle and that was a Talisker and my god it was amazing, so deep and profound.. I never forgot that taste and that was the dram that got me into whiskey in the first place.
Saying that I got my first Talisker bottle about 2 years after and it wasn't the same at all, it was a different bottling it was a different taste, it was different whiskey.

So yeah I totally understand that people dislike today's Talisker but the previous bottlings 6 years plus ago where really amazing stuff.

My Ardbeg is getting low already. been looking at Uigeadail and Corryvrecken. Whats the big difference besides price? I know Ugi is sherrired and Corry is slightly higher proof, but cant get a concrete comparison of the 2 after hours of research. Wish i could find miniatures to get a handle personally but they arent something found in this area. I feel like I have enough sherry in my invemtory atm, but maybe Uigeadail is the bottle I've been missing out on, maybe corryvrecken is just 10 but younger and higher proof from slect casks. However, I have a independent bottling of the 10 which is pretty good. In anycase, I would not lose sleep over it nor pay a lot for the 12.

Nikka from the Barrel is a great Japanese in the same price range, but it's rare and can be hard to find. At around $80, Dalwhinnie 15 and Aberlour A'bunadh are better value for money IMO, but there's nothing wrong with Hibiki as a gift, like I said, it's a good tasting whiskey with a very nice looking bottle, and frankly sometimes overpriced bottles are the best gifts because you might give a collector something they'd be hesitant to buy a bottle of themselves, that's why Johnnie Walker gets away with charging $200/bottle for Blue Label, they straight up market it as a gift which is why it comes in a box with ribbons and tassels.

picked up a bottle of wild turkey 101 that tasted tainted or some shit. Strong taste of something like mold or gasoline on top of the usual flavor profile. Had half of what I poured and then sent the rest down the drain. Woke up the next morning with a raw patch in my throat and decided to pour the rest of the down the drain to be safe. Pretty sure I was drinking industrial solvent or something.

>> No.15262731

the potstill meme is like the natty wine meme or the sour beer meme. it's a novelty for people who have never tried it, then the novelty wears off and you realize most of it actually sucks and there's a reason the ENTIRE INDUSTRY overwhelmingly prefers the mainstream way. saying you prefer "funk" or "interesting flavors" is just broadcasting that you're just getting your feet wet and "everything is so wonderful and exciting" babby palate needs to be shared with everyone. like the boozehound version of the kid who just got back from his first trip abroad and can't shut up about how DIFFERENT they do (some mundane thing) over there OMG THEY EVEN HAVE DIFFERENT LIGHT SOCKETS

>> No.15262755

>>15262731
A large reason for why the industry prefers column still is that you can do large-scale continuous distillation, whereas you can't with pot still.

>> No.15262776

>>15262755
industry does not actually care if it's "continuous" or not they care about profits and profits are affected by dozens of variables. just like natty wine you can actually make good product with potstill if you don't care about production costs and are willing to compromise yields, but in reality production costs affect profits. end users who want a shortcut will reliably buy on the meme words and if you put a meme word that implies high production costs many consoomers will simplly assume it's good even if it tastes like ass. so what you get is a lot of shitty product that people buy anyway because le old world artisanal craftsmanship.

tl;dr unless you are disgustingly rich you cannot afford to be a potstill fanatic and you are just drinking headache dregs and suppressing your own gag reflex to look cool

Rumfriends, do I have anything here?

>>15264902
Such is life. I was given every opportunity and I'm even "smart" enough to understand engineering/law/etc. But I chose shitty friends, shitty life commitments and shitty skills. Now I'm 30 and qualified only for restaurant-tier jobs and $40k in student debt. No one will hire me for a big boy job cuz I got a shit gpa from a shit school and bounced from cruddy job to cruddy job after with big employment gaps. My own ethics and decisions made me a very low quality person. I guess I watched too many movies and believed my life would be like that.

I'm not sad anymore or spending my attention rolling in disappointment. I'm working on setting up a simple life and hopefully attracting a qt who isn't an ex-heroin/cokehead like all the other waitresses I've met who aren't tied down to more successful men. A little fitness and managing my money.

So I take a little pride in drinking laphroaig because it tastes the way I feel about myself.

I don't think it has anything to do with Campbeltown and has everything to do with non costal peat. Plenty of other regions, and even non-scotch, are using an earthier peat.
The Campbeltown, or rather Springbank distillery character is a lemony note which is so slight that I can only smell it on a good day and have never tasted. And even that is frequently labelled as citrus despite it being the lemon candy and not at all reminiscent of citric acid.

It's fantastic. The most intensely sherried whisky I have ever had. This is what I expect when a bottle is labelled with 100% sherry matured. I was so disappointed by Glendronach in comparison.
The closest comparison is probably Quinta Ruben, but way less oak and more raisins.
I wouldn't pay $90AUD for it though, which seems to be the going rate, given I could just drink sherry if super fruity is my goal.

Campfire smoke and a light musk/indistinct sweetness. I've never found pineapple in it like >>15272135 suggests, that's more a Glenlivet 12 fruity speyside kinda thing imo.

I pushed Old Pulteney a lot as an alternative. I recently bought a bottle though, and it turns out I was hammered on Islay when I tasted it and there's basically no peat. The 18 is more in line with Talisker, but fuck that price. Actually I had the Talisker 18 recently too and both are tied for the slightest improvement with the largest price increase that I have come across so far.

>take ash from campfire
>dump it in liquor
>light it on fire

There you go, you just drank a literally actually objective factual campfire.

Good to know I can just stick with the 10 then.

No, that's literally, objectively and factually ash in liquor, not wood combusting at a campsite.

Okay, then you take a chip of wood and light it on fire and drink it at a campsite.

Pretty immediately Imo. In AUD with examples;
>$40+
JW Red, Bulleit 40%, Jack, Jim. Wouldn't sip.
>$50+
JW Black, Glen Grant NAS, Glen Moray 12, Bulleit Rye, Bushmills 10. Might Sip but not that enjoyable.
>$60+
Glenlivet 12, Glenfiddich 12, Glen Grant 10, WT 101, Russels 10, Starward 2 fold, Loch Lomond 12. Entry level.
>$70+
JW Green, Blantons, Glen Moray 15, Glengoyne 10, Ledaig 10. This is the good value price bracket where you see attempts to undercut competition.
>$80+
Ardbeg 10, Laphroaig 10, Talisker 10, Dalwhinnie 15, Finished Glenmorangie, Glenfarcalas 12. Actually at this price bracket there are shit tonnes of fantastic choices and the bulk of my purchases happens here.
>$90+
Lagavulin 16, Clynleish 14, Oban 14, Glenrothes 12, Glendronach 12. Stuff here is marginally better.

The next price jump towards 15 year olds / cask strengths / independent bottlings is like $50.
So I'd say Lagavulin 16 as a low bar and Glenfiddich 15 as high bar for too expensive whisky with severely diminished returns.

Ardbeg 10 is sort of one dimensional if you arent searching for or concentrating on the individual notes. The most prominent is of course the peat and smoke/brine/salt and a sweetness that is similar to pineapple but also a richness of chocolate and a cooling effect like that of mint. neat it will lean on the smokey/almost meaty side, but with a bit of water it will bring it closer to being 50/50 smoke and sweet. I think some people may also get the mint as iodine and with water will be well incorporated in the finish as well.

lads I am very excited it has been lots of fun talking about whisky with you this year I learned a lot.

Am I doing myself a disservice starting out with all the cask-strength stuff like this? Will I be unable to sense the nuance? I've only had (decent) whisky four times in my life, last december and bought all this based on those evenings and what people here have said. Out of these, have only tried the uigaedail and talisker (but I have had laga 16 and laphroaig 10).

Cask strength is best strength. Drink it neat or you're a tremendous turbofaggot.

Right on. I would say the only way you can do yourself a disservice is if you drink any of them absentmindedly. I get the most enjoyment out of good booze when I give it attention and take my time. No point drinking the expensive stuff if you're chilling watching a movie, or hanging with friends. Also, it's good to try them with and without a bit of water, because the nose and palate changes and that's a way to explore more of the spirit's character.

Even for AUD, those are some fucked up prices
