Poke more than anything. It's an infuriating trendy food now on the mainland where haoles eat 1 1/2 ounces of shitty frozen tuna or farmed salmon covered in mayonnaise with a way too much rice and filler toppings, and it's expensive as fuck.

Pic related was the fish market in my home town, fishermen would sell their catch here and they would turn that fish off the boat into sashimi and poke right there. Just a little bit of shoyu, kukui oil, ogo, green onion. You could get a pound of fish with rice for $10.

Not a different country I guess, but feels like it sometimes.

When I was growing up on the big island we didn't have many white tourists, and those that did come mostly stayed on the Kona side where it's warm and sunny and dry, and there's sand on the beaches. Hilo side where I'm from the beaches are mostly just lava rock leading to water (pic). Most people in Hilo are asian or mixed asian, and lots of them Japanese too so Jap tourists never bothered me, they were always polite and genuinely excited about things. White tourists I did encounter were often fat, bitchy, impatient and wasteful. That was in the 90s/00s though, millenials probably travel more politely. Sucks hearing about all the property being bought up on my island by retirees though, raising living costs in a place with an already poor population.
