The quality of out-of-season fruit is terrible these days. The difference between buying an orange that's been in a storage cooling warehouse for six months, and one fresh plucked from the tree is not describable to those who have never tried the fresh item. (California oranges are in season right about now, and the Nectarines are especially good just now)

Let's say you have a potato and an apple of roughly the same size. They would contain roughly the same amount of food energy, but the potato would be more satiating and nutritious. The apple's only merit is that it doesn't necessarily demand cooking. Fruit is a meme.

It's meant to be a specialty item. You can get these tropical fruits from South America, Africa, and Asia shipped anywhere within the continental US. I'm not going to get all my fruit from them, but I figure it would be a fun thing to get around the holidays or for special occasions.
