First time cooking on cast iron, seared some sausages with oil and they left these marks. They aren't going away from scrubbing with brush or scraper.

wat do

Cast iron is single use. Throw it away and get a new one

How about you fucking season that thing

That's not a thing. You need to season it. Tons of videos about it on youtube. Do not listen to autism posted here

I followed Lodge's instructions. It just said to rinse with warm water and dry before using it the first time.

Just keep using it, washing is unnecessary for cast iron, just wipe out the excess grease with a paper towel and enjoy

So I shouldn't season it? Will it get seasoning naturally the more I cook in it?

Honestly with the amount of conflicting information I don’t know, but my gf’s dad basically does what I described and his cast iron works perfectly fine for everything I’ve seen it used for.

Just fucking season it. There is an forced meme here about le take care of you cast iron wrong because it's funny or something. Stop coming here for advice

I don't come here often so I don't know about the cast iron memes. I've heard that the Crisco and oven method is the best for keeping a good seasoning.

get some oil, vegetable oil. wipe it with the oil and a paper towel. get excess oil out of it. Put it in a 250 oven for an hour and then shut off the heat and let it cool in the oven. Now you can wash it with soap and warm water when you cook in it if you want, or don't but washing it will not harm it or the seasoning.

Seasoning will build up by cooking on it, yes.

But I would still season it. It's not that hard to do. Avoid cooking highly acidic ingredients too as they will wear down the seasoning. The important thing when seasoning is to use a very very thin coating of oil, so that it will get hot and polymerize properly. If it's a thicker layer at all then it can fail to fully polymerize, making it gummy and sticky instead of hard and smooth.

I don't use cast iron because it's too heavy for me, but I do cook often on carbon steel, which employs much the same principle. If I ever use soap on it, it's just a tiny little bit. Usually I just scrub gently under water while the pan is still warm, and then wipe with a paper towel. It is important to fully dry the pan too. Not necessary where thick seasoning has built up, but any unseasoned metal surfaces will rust very easily.

The biggest mistake you can make with cast iron is caring too much and being a sperg. Short of yeeting it into a volcano its almost impossible to fuck up. French peasants in 1284 didnt care if their cast iron was seasoned and neither should you. Ive always just spent the first week or so cooking bacon exclusively, then worked up to other things like burgers and steaks while using more fat than usual. Over time you get a good seasoning. Dont be one of those /r/CastIron spergs who think you have to season it six times in a 500 degree oven with cold pressed virgin flaxseed oil and all that shit.

Ita like $20 for one anyways, its not like All Clad or Le Creuset where it would actually be bad if you DID damage it due to negligence.

heat your pan just smoking hot
grab a small towel and dip it on canola oil or lard
wipe the entire pan with the towel for about 2-3 minutes
let the pan cool down
there, it's seasoned

>> No.15122262

why are you all memeing about >pre-seasoned, every cast iron pan you can buy new IS pre-seasoned now
op doesn't have to season it again and those marks will be gone when the pan is used more
