In 1984, attending college in Violette Hall (the math department), there was a drop cup vending machine that sold a cup of soda for 15 cents (can dispensing machines sold for a quarter). It would drop the cup, then dispense the ice and the soda. It was crushed ice. Not ice cubes or ice pellets, but 1970's style crushed ice. I guess you had to be then to appreciate it.

It was late fall and decided to buy a soda from the machine. I pushed the button, quickly moved my hands to be near the cup dispenser just in case I needed to be ready for an emergency (you know what I mean), but everything was fine. When I stood up, I noticed a little light was lit on the machine. Was it lit before? It said something like, "you won a free soda." I'd never noticed it before. Was it true? Did it actually mean I'd won something? Sure enough, when I pushed the dispensing button again, I got another cup of soda! I never win anything, so how cool was that? But now, I had to go to class, and I needed two hands free to carry my two cups, haha! Ah, good times, good memories.

As a kid in the 80's and into the early 90's I had a knack for finding machines that had faulty coin return buttons. I worked out that by rapidly striking the coin return I could get some older machines to barf up several dollars in change which I would feed back into the machine to get candy. I would keep most of it but also took to bringing some to school for the candy black market.

In the early 80s, I had a friend in high school who bough at lock pick from Soldier of Fortune magazine. It opened the circular type locks that were common on vending machines.
We were in the "gifted" program and had passes to go off campus to learn Fortran, but instead we would break in to vending machines, steal all the quarters, and use them at bowling alleys and arcades to play video games. Pic related was my favorite

In my engineering college building, there was a vending machine that had one spot that, no matter what was loaded into it, would drop one item and then nearly drop a second item. With a light shake to the machine, you'd get a second item for free. Rather than fixing it, they just put something there that was cheap and doubled the price.

There was a company called Lance that didn't bother with vending machines. They just set their stuff out on a rack with a change jar next to it, see picrelated, and figured that people would be honest and pay for what they took. That's what "honor system" means on the sign at center-right in the picrelated.

It worked for years, from 1954 until some time in the 1980s, but society changed and they didn't and so they ended up going bankrupt because of all the thefts.

Never got our machines back

Weird, the site that I looked them up on said they first became a business in 1954.

I used to buy Lance peanut-butter crackers off an open rack with a change box in the 1980s. It disappeared from that location some time in the late 1980s or early 1990s, which is around when I heard they went bankrupt due to all the theft.

Although you can get soup from a vending machine in Japan, Japanese vending machines are overwhelmingly beverage based. Finding actual meal vending machines is quite rare.
The soup is usually a canned corn soup, essentially being sold as a beverage. It's pretty tough to call that a meal.

used to live off of the coffee vending machines at my college. it'd be $1 for a mocha and I'd grab one before holing up in the library to study, but one night there was some grittiness to it and I thought maybe it's just ground coffee beans got through the filter. when I bit down it was spicy and suddenly I didn't think it was coffee beans anymore. For me, it's the Violette Hall soda vending machine. The best vending machine on the Truman State campus. It even uses real crushed ice.

One time I noticed that a little light had turned on, seemingly indicating that I had won a free soda. And indeed, I had! As I walked to class with the two styrofoam cups, I passed by my advisor ’s office and mentioned my good fortune. After all, I never win anything, so how cool was that? I offered him one of the sodas. As I left for my weekly Lie Groups seminar, he chuckled and shouted after me, “don’t forget to win a free one for me again next time!”

For the rest of the academic year, he ALWAYS greeted me with, “Hey, you got a free soda for me?” It’s such a collegial and supportive atmosphere in the Truman State Math Department, I ended up returning as an instructor for a few years between my Master’s and PhD, 1-2 times when they hosted the regional MAA conference, and I still sometimes stop by to use the library. And of course, I visit the vending machine--when I’m thirsty and want a sweet beverage that is carbonated, iced, and gives me the chance to win a prize. (I worked it out before graduating: every 64th purchase, with the counter reset after power interruption or restocking.)

Back when I smoked, I even used the styrofoam cups as ashtrays! What a great vending machine.

What good fortune! But just then, a terrible tumult arouse. You see, several onlookers had been prying into the machine’s orifices, attempting to ascertain how it could function without the sound and smoke of a steam engine. (Electricity was certainly not an option; the only such demonry at the Fair belonged to that conjurer N. Tesla.) The secret had been carefully concealed…

It was called Northeast Missouri State University back then, NMSU for short, but I guess they got tired of their branding being confused with New Mexico State University, so they changed their name to Truman to "better reflect their core values."

Just west of Violette was an iconic piece of architecture, the arch through the science building. A thousand students would pass through that arch every day, and in the winter, it would act as a wind tunnel, chilling you to your bones, and you'd share the moment with your friends you were walking with and say, "Wow!" and they'd smile and give you that i-know-right? look.

I thought it would last forever, but it's been removed, converted to classroom space as the building was modernized and updated, and now no one will have those memories any more. All that's left are the fading echoes of crushed ice falling into drop cup vending machines.

Last time I saw one of those in a general public access place was in a local laundromat when I was in high school. It was near a neighborhood that had a lot of "bad kids" (or so I thought then) that got their cigarettes there. Then again, there was a Turkey Hill convenience store 100 yards away that would sell me cigarettes and Swisher Sweets even though I wasn't even old enough to drive. Ahh the 80s. When I was in school, there was a vending machine for coca cola and such and it would often get jammed. I worked out that if you kicked the coin slot, it would undo the jam and you'd get a load of coins from reject as well as a couple of free cans. I also once found a Victorian 2 penny coin by it once.

I was at Millington to attend 'A' school, after boot camp. I eventually became an Aviation Electronics Technician, eventually I changed my Rating and became and Naval Aircrewman, specifically an Aviation Rescue Swimmer (AIRR).

When I lived in Germany they still had cigarette vending machines. I remember asking how they prevented unsupervised kids from buying cigarettes. My german friends were confused and told me there was no such thing as unsupervised kids in germany. If kids are in public they are being supervised by any and all adults in the area. If they get into trouble or start doing something they are not supposed to (like buying cigarettes from a vending machine) a nearby adult will intervene.

Overall, I was amazed by the amount of stuff in Germany that just operated off of the honor system. It was just expected that functional citizens shouldn't need safeguards put in place to prevent abuse. This was all before the refugee tidalwave, I imagine that high trust high social cohesion societey has changed quite a bit now.

In 2006 or so my high school vending machines got replaced from the classic style where all the buttons are on the right, to the big panels in the middle.
I had read online about "hacking" vending machines by pressing the buttons in a certain order, and it worked. You pressed four of the pepsi products on the left in a 4 2 3 1 or whatever order and then pressed the soda you wanted.
There was also a combination of that that worked on the classic machines, but they had disabled it at my school ones, but not at certain hotels and motels in the area.

The only one that sticks out to me is the one at my mom's psychiatrist when I was a kid in the late 90e in New York.
It was a very large old building even as a young kid I knew it was dated the vending machine had a wood (wood painted plastic?) Outside and the buttons didn't light up. It look like it was from the early '70s I would always beg my mom to get something from it just because how cool it looked.
I still remember a place fairly well even though I was very young It looks so cool The old medical offices straight from the '50s where it looks like nothing had really changed in 50 years the retro green tiles and old gray and green faded carpets the large oak trees in the courtyard with vintage benches.

It's so cool I wonder if it's still there that vending machine?that building? a living time capsule a direct view into the past

Wow, this thread popped a completely random memory in my head.

I used to buy drop cup cappuccino as a teen routinely. Small town (3000 people), was at a rest stop everyone hung out at.

A small coffee shop opened up with a middle aged woman from the large city about 5 hours away.
Me and my friends walked in, I ordered a cappucino.
She proceeded to rant at me for about 10 minutes on whether I wanted a "real cappucino" or the "fake" ones that everyone gets out of a vending machine, and that I had no clue what I really wanted and was completely ignorant.
I was like 14 so whatever, just let it slide. She tried to small talk afterwards, I told her I had bought some Black Sabbath vinyls at the local thrift store (I bought all sorts of stereo equipment back then, it was cheap and everywhere).
She went on another 10 minute rant about how awful vinyl is and how great CDs are.

We walked out, and I went to drink it and the fucking lid fell off and I dumped it all over my jacket, right in front of the cop who was walking into the coffee shop.
We were all high and had pot on us so I kind of freaked out.

The coffee shop didnt last too long, its hard to get assimilated into a small town if you didnt grow up there.
Also its funny looking back how paranoid everyone was about pot, and how harsh the penalties for it was. Especially seeing how its legal now.

So yeah, its a mundane boring story, but I havent thought about that coffee shop in probably 15 years.

It's relatively easy to buy all sorts of stuff with questionable legal status. Back when I wish in high school I locked the keys in the car when I went downtown with a friend to the pawnshop. I asked the pawn shop guy if he had anything that could help me get my door open, and the guy let me borrow a slim jim. Pawn shop guys are pretty cool in my experience.

My small town bowling alley had one behind the bar.
You would pay cash to the bar, and then they would vend it and hand you the cigarettes.

It was essentially just storage for them. Maybe the vending machine couldnt physically handle the price of cigarettes after the sin tax hike made them over $5 a pack, they were made when smokes were like 1$ a pack

when these belt drink machines first started rolling out, you could trick the machine and get free drinks.
there's a conveyor belt, and a drink is dropped onto it, and the belt pushes the drink through a door and into the green plastic coke bottle orifice. i'd seen a video on how to get extra drinks out of it, but i'd not tried. i was with my mother and brother, in a waiting room at a doctor's office, and there was one of these machines in the common area. my mom gave me a dollar to get a drink, and i figured i'd get two extra for each of them too.

so you order your drink, and stick your arm up through the green plastic bottle and hold the door closed. the machine fruitlessly to ram the drink bottle through the door, and gives up after a few tries. it refunds your money and the drink stays on the conveyor. it marks that selection as "sold out", since the door never opened. so i do it again. and on the final one, i let all three bottles through. three drinks for a dollar.
