I'm fond of Black Sheep ales myself

Also St Peter's, Wainwright's, Timothy Taylor.

I don't want some poofter double IPA with hints of grapefruit or whatever, I want 7-10 pints with the lads and a game of darts

A significant country for beer.... a huge brewing history and birthplace of many now globally popular styles (notably IPAs, pale ales, porters, stouts, barley wine and brown ales).

Nowadays there are two big camps in British brewing: traditional breweries that generally produce cask ale (bitters, golden ale, ruby ale, mild, english-style IPA) that are not widely available abroad. There are very few places outside of the UK that serve cask ale. Some of the notable breweries here would be Samuel Smiths, Timothy Taylors, Fuller's, and St Austells... but its generally the case that a pub will have local ale on tap.

The ones you are likely to find abroad would be Fuller's, and maybe Wychwood/Hobgoblin (not great) and Newcastle Brown Ale (utter piss nowadays, since being bought out by Heineken). Also some nitro ales like John Smiths & Boddingtons which are pretty much flavourless nowadays.

There's also a lot of very good British craft beer (Kernel, Verdant and Cloudwater being some of the best) but honestly follows a similar pattern to craft breweries in basically any Western country with a craft scene nowadays.

To the foreign drinker I suspect that traditional English beer will seem subdued - compared to the famous Belgian beers, or modern craft beers. It's best experienced locally, in a nice pub in rural England. Personally i'd find it hard to judge it free from my nostalgia and fond memories of pints down the pub.

As far as regular ale goes it's not too bad. Better than America, worse than Germany. Personally I like St Peters and Bath Ales.

Lots of decent craft brews in the supermarket worth trying - Siren, Brewdog etc.

Some great, widely available beers off the top of my head:

Sam Smith's Nut Brown and Oatmeal Stout
Barnsley Bitter
Fuller's London Pride
Timothy Taylor's Landlord
Thornbridge Jaipur
Abbeydale Heretic

Compared to other country's like strong Belgian or super hoppy American beers, some UK ones might seem subdued and simple, especially bitters and ale. But theres a purity to them that is often very nice.

some history for you all

in 1900 a typical licensed pub in London would serve the following:
1. Ginger beer
2. Porter, called in London “Beer” and elsewhere in the country “Stout”.
3. Ale, otherwise known as “Four-ale”, “Cold Fourpenny”, “Mild”, “Mild Ale”, &c. In Bristol it is known as “Burton"
4. Bitter, called in bulk “Pale Ale”.
5. Stout.
6. Burton, strictly called “Old Ale” (stronger ale)

beers 1-3 cost 1 penny per half pint, whilst 4-6 cost 2 pence per half pint.

it was quite common for people to mix these in various ways
>gingerbeer and porter: 'portergaff'
>gingerbeer and mild: 'shandy' or 'shandygaff'
>gingerbeer and bitter: 'shandybitter'
>porter and ale: 'four-half' - usually sold in your own jug at 3.5pence a pot
>porter and stout: 'cooper'
>mild and burton: 'old six'
>stout and bitter: 'mother-in-law'

That I could get behind. What crossed the line was this:

>In July 2017, Samuel Smith's Brewery banned motorcyclists from one of their pubs. Initially no explanation was offered for the ban. It was later reported that the ban was instituted to keep "undesirables" from patronising the establishment. Local, long-term customers who were refused entry because they owned motorcycles, were offended by notion of being compared to criminal motorcycle gangs.

When your "English pub" would bar James May from entry, clearly you're doing something wrong.

Alcohol is not a drink, you either consume it or not
there were attempts with vine, to make it a taste thing to launder money, but alcohol is alcohol, its a drug and will always remain a drug
if you arent into alcohol, you dont know shit about alcohol and should avoid it
And yes, you can function better if you are into alcohol in a society, because we live in one, but no, you cannot tread reach the understanding or enlightenment of alcohol if you arent into it

Rattler is great, I just wish it was easier to find outside of the west country. Strongbow Dark Fruit is the best of their offerings with the cloudy version coming second, but pic related tastes pretty close to Ribena if you can find it.

Where you from mate? I think brits either come off as generally pretty smug or very brash and it can piss people off. Got to bare in mind the UK has a lot of different groups of people living in it. Welsh people are different to Cornish who are different to Londoners.

Just avoid the south-east whatever you do. It's hell. Would rather live in Birmingham than there.

Basically English style pale ale.. which was more bitter than other popular beer at the time known as 'mild'
>From the moment that bitter beers started to become popular in Britain, around the beginning of the 1840s, “bitter beer” and “pale ale” were used by brewers and commentators as synonyms. There never was any difference between the two. Why did “pale ale” come to be appended as a name mostly to the bottled version of bitter? Because generally in the 19th century brewers called the drink in the brewery “pale ale”, and that’s the name they put on their bottle labels, but in the pub drinkers called this new drink “bitter”, to differentiate it from the older, sweeter, but still (then) pale mild ales ('mild').

I'm probably going to make some. I've been working on a bitter recipe and when it feels right I'm going to get a beer engine and the whole setup for cask ale.
