I'll say that for the most part try to have two of something. One "good" that you trust and prefer, and another cheap that you don't mind losing. This comes in handy if for prep and not having time for cleaning or if you just want to get risky and maybe ruin a certain utensil.

I know it's kind of a meme but cast iron is great. If you treat it right, it'll treat you right. That said, it isn't magic and invincible. Keep it away from soap and water and take care of it.
