What do you think of Jamaican food ? In the Toronto area it's quite popular, it has a reputation for making the best jerk chicken outside of Jamaica and every subway station here sells beef patties

I also live in Toronto. I get Jamaican food pretty frequently, it's one of my favourites. There's nothing like a good jerk chicken sandwich with coleslaw, mmm...

Jamaican food is really good. I guess they make it a little differently in Toronto, because I have never seen the veggies look like that.

Place here in Ottawa makes a mean curry chicken roti and oxtail patties. I've been using Jamaican curry seasoning a ton lately, really nice stuff

Nice, didn't know it was popular in Ottawa. In Toronto there are lots of jamicans so we have plenty of good restaurants here. Got jerk chicken and Cajun fish roti the other day

I've never understood why Little Jamaica has the worse Jerk Chicken and Roti in the city. Do you have any ideas?

OP, jamaican food aint all that. It's still povery food for the most part, with a mix of vegan religious diet stuff, a lot of soups with squash and curry.
There are some favorites people enjoy that revolves around fresh seafood, grilling up whole fish on the bone, and covering the cooked fish in scotch bonnet vinegary escabeche sauce. But they don't even just eat good seafood, for the most part do not eat the good deep water fish or clean shellfish we prefer, but some bony shit like flying fish, or old wife, or barracuda, angelfish, ie reef fish no one else eats, that runs risk of ciguatoxin, etc.
Jerk pork > chicken, becuase the chicken can't take a long marinade whatsoever and big pork roasts are made for marinading and mopping while grilling, all the herbs and green onion blended, with a good slow smoke time from pimento wood (from the allspice tree). I doubt you get jerk smoked over pimento.
Beans and rice is cooked in coconut milk, which is yummy but not that far from a cajun red beans with the heavy thyme. Pepper pot soup is an old colonial american/british recipe and just enjoys a whole meaty skull in there, which makes it rich, but do you want an eyeball in your soup?.
Good beef patties are hard to come by, there's always a bit of filler in there, or some shortcuts in the dough. There's some great ones still made in Miami with some soft cocobread (or hard dough bread). From lobster patties to spicy beef to mild but my absolute favorite one has some rhubard spiced plantain.
At easter time you should look for fresh spice buns, the spice cake that is richer than fruitcake or carrot cake, moister than banana bread, and more gingery than gingerbread. It's the best.

Go grab it; it's just on the other side of Cuba. It's small, so maybe grab Little Cayman while you're there.

>curry chicken roti and oxtail patties.
Roti is more popular in Jamaican, but it's wayyy more popular in other island cuisines with more indian influences, Trini for sure, and then maybe next on the list is Surinam and Guyananese.
Jamaica's most common last name is Chin, and the chinese influence is pretty much greatest with the British old timey recipes mixed with African.

This. Jamaicans in S. Florida do jamaican cuisine better than in the islands. It's kind of like how Cuban food is best in S. Florida too.

Warden station patties and patty supremes (I've seen them go by other names but that's what I mainly see them called) are the absolute GOAT. My guilty pleasure on commutes through there. Haven't been there in months but hope the bakery is doing well for when stuff goes back to normal.
