I only tried it last year, tried a little uncooked and some slices on a pan with some friends. Very similar to hotdog but holy shit the saltiness. I didn't dislike it but man you gotta be really salty to get me to think that

Spam has always been pretty good fried up with some eggs and a ton of hot sauce. Turkey spam on sandwiches is also really good.

Spam or sardines started as my go to for when money was tight in uni and never stopped, now I just eat them for every meal, easily the best taste for price, goes with any base.

I giving love it, especially fried
I just can't justify paying $6 a can for it when 200g pork chops are $2 each.

I think it was a wartime/post war food shortages thing, or maybe it was just super cheap because of surplus from US army bases or something.

I like SPAM, typically just get the low sodium because it's salty as hell anyway. Perfect for a hangover or if you've been doing it tough hiking all day or something like that

>> No.14952728

preserved meats like spam and the like should be avoided
they are all preserved with sodium nitrate, which IS cancerous. not just 'linked to' or 'correlated', it WILL cause cancer if enough is consumed.
be wary

yep. salami, spam, etc is okay once a week or less i suppose, but too much is a serious health risk. nitrates are suspected of being the #1 cause of cancer in America

>> No.14953451

>>14953448
as a lover of SPAM I must relay that the low sodium versions (25% less in USA and 1/3 less in Oceania/Europre) are both still more than a day's worth of sodia per serving. It works-out fine for me because I have a disorder where I piss all my sodium out all day and it's almost impossible for me to have too much salt or sugar in my bloodveins, but for a normal person one must be reasonable with their SPAMs

It became a hot commodity during the Korean War when meat was scarce, US soldiers sold or traded it out the back doors of Army bases. If you could get your hands on Spam it meant you were wealthier or more connected than everybody else. During postwar Hormel seized the opportunity to grow their market over there by promoting Spam as the food that would rebuild South Korea.
