What's the point of a rice cooker? Why not just use a microwave?

I gave away my microwave to the warehouse dudes at work because I never use one. It's easy to reheat food on the stove and I don't buy microwavable meals anyways. Also, I had the extra money for a Zojirushi, I have the counter space for it. I spent about $120 over 10 years ago, so for the usage I've gotten it has more than paid for itself. I press one button and fuck off, it cooks rice perfectly and keeps it warm for hours. Finally, before COVID my GF and I would have our friends over for a big dinner every so often and having one extra free burner actually really made a difference.

There is no point. A microwave is such a brilliant kitchen appliance with such a diverse range of uses, I feel sorry whenever I hear about somebody who has done mental gymnastics to convince themselves that microwaves are in some way cheap or tacky.
Microwaves for life my nigger shit on the monotasker meme bollocks.

dude, i'm as white trash as it gets, but this enthusiasm is just weird
i've got a zojirushi for shit like red beans and rice, which i eat often
it's got a timer and warmer, so you can set it to go off an hour before you come home (the timer actually *ends* on the time you set, i like to go an hour before so it has a moment to dry out a bit)
warm up some red beans on the stove, fry a piece of andouille, blam, red beans and rice, no microwave needed

I was reading about making roux the other day and came across this
https://www.nola.com/entertainment_life/eat-drink/article_ecd999e0-5af8-5152-8fc4-820a80ce0c5e.html
>Collette Weaver writes, "My mother, Jeanne Landry, taught people how to cook in the microwave starting in the 1960s. She was the first to develop the 'microwave roux' and privately published "Saute: A Collection of Creole Recipes for the Microwave Oven". To this day, most of my cooking is done in the microwave, from Creole chicken stew to stuffed eggplant with shrimp to all gumbos.

>"Although as a small girl I was taught how to make a roux on the stove top, now I always cook my roux in a class measuring cup in the microwave. It takes about 10 minutes to make. You cannot tell the difference in texture or taste although you do have to stir it constantly and watch it the last few minutes as it is easy to burn it."
I feel really sad for that girl

Idiot-proof rice cooking that turns out perfect every time.
>Why not just use a microwave?
That's fine too, but often you want to use the microwaves oven for something else.

The issue with monotaskers isn't they do a single thing, but rather they'll take too much space for the relative little amount of benefit. They might be still useful if it's for stuff you're doing everyday - e.g. spätzlemakers for some Germans or... rice cookers for East Asians and some LatAms.

You cook rice in a microwave?

>> No.14906306

i had a model similar to OP's picture
and honeslty i mostly used it so it didnt take up a burner and i didnt have to watch it as carefully
just wash the rice, put into the cooker with water and some aromatics and let it sit for 20 minutes
was quite convenient
i dont have it anymore but the difference is basically nothing, just have to watch it a little closer to avoid burning
