Is vodka sauce a meme?

Never had it but I see no reason to add vodka to what could otherwise be a very tasty sauce, even if you're cooking off the alcohol. Why not just red wine?

Red wine has an entirely different flavor profile. The vodka helps bring out some of the flavor of the tomatoes and you add a bit of cream, it's very good.
