It's fries and bread. Fries alone are already too dry and carby. Putting that in between bread makes that problem way worse. Sounds miserable. You're putting something dry with something dry. Usually you put meat, cheese, veggies to complement the bread, fries is the exact opposite.

because quotidian cuisine doesn't move particularly quickly, especially when it involves simple kinds of food. For instance, folks still eat meat on a stick and will do so for at least a couple more centuries.
There's plenty of fancy british food, but when it comes to something to down before a night shift you can't beat originals.

The best food in every culture is evolved from subsistence food made by peasants. They had cheap/perishable/leftover ingredients and invented ways to make them palatable. Korea has kimchi, France has cheese, South Asia has curry, IPA was invented because it keeps on long ship journeys to India, refried beans are the most calorific way to eat beans.

Given food rationing only ended in 1954, there's actually a surprising amount of great modern British food.

south america (semi-tropical regions in general really) has a wide berth of naturally occurring ingredients and spices. england is a barren island where almost everything that isn't fish or grains has to be imported. it's very similar to japan, where basically everything they eat is grains and seafood, but unlike japan england isn't a big fan of the seafood and tries to get other shit.
