Why is it that coffee is all of a sudden making people particularly women anxious, to the point where many people are outright giving it up.
People used to drink coffee a lot more back in the day and people were in general less anxious than today. What happened?

Stressful times. Serotonin/dopamine overload in general. More empathy and critical awareness. We're wired to chase satisfaction and both lacking and being overstimulated with these chemicals causes a "wanting" feeling that translates into anxiety. It's an important evolutionary trait but has drawbacks. Coffee just emphasizes this reaction because of heart rate and caffeine.

First time I'm hearing of this

Coffee makes me less anxious because if I drink enough I start to feel like some of my problems are actually assailable.

Boomer coffee was/is watered down shit. Drip manufacturers gave wild underestimates for the amount of grounds/cup one would use in their machines and boomers took this as a mantra. Post-third wave coffee emphasized consistency in water:ground ratio and this resulted in stronger coffee overall.

It's because the quality of coffee has dropped. Now everyone is drinking cheap robusta which is packed full of caffeine instead of quality arabica which has half the caffeine content of robusta.

I had my first cup of Arabica a few weeks ago and jesus christ, the taste is so much better it's unreal.
