How the FUCK do I cook without setting off my ridiculously sensitive smoke alarm?

for example

>one step of a steak recipe says to sear at maximum heat for 60 seconds
>smoke alarm explodes ten seconds in

Am I just doomed to never use olive oil?

Go to the ethnic aisle at your grocery store and get yourself a bottle of grapeseed oil. It's cheap, neutral, and has a high smoke point. Grapeseed is what I use most of the time now. Make sure that you check the ingredients though, some brands will try to screw you with mostly canola oil.

You can try using "light" olive oil. Light olive oil has been refined so it has a higher smoke point.

Also you probably just want to wait until your pan is hot enough so that water does this in the pan when you put a drop in. If you wait much longer than that then it might just get to the point where it starts burning anything you put in.

Disconnect it from the power line and remove the battery.

It's super easy, you just turn it a half turn to the side and it will release from the ceiling, then you can unplug the wire that powers it and just twist the smoke detector back onto the mounting bracket so there isn't any ugly hole in the ceiling.

Everywhere I've lived, the smoke detectors have a little plug that connects them to the mains power. It's different from the bare wires that go into light switches or electrical sockets, and looks more like the plug that powers fans inside a PC case. The battery is just there as a backup if the mains power fails.

Pretty sure the battery-only smoke detectors are just used in houses that were built before smoke detectors were required in the building code.
