The poorest wouldn't have much meat to eat but I think it was more common among everyone else. And if they weren't eating much meat they were probably eating more fish/eggs/dairy. I don't think Europeans ever really excluded animal products that much.

Meat consumption was slightly down at times even before this, though I'd be curious if it was offset by an increased consumption of eggs and dairy. Meat substitutes are also getting more popular. But yeah right now with people struggling to pay rent it might not always be by choice.

Would also be curious to see what meat consumption would be like with lab-grown meat if it's equivalent to the real thing and cheaper. I'd expect it to go way up since there isn't any moral or cost concerns, because people usually don't eat less meat because they simply don't like meat as much anymore.
