I enjoy the anticipation in the lead up to ordering food and the ordering of the food itself (perusing the menu, enjoying the scenery of the dining area, chatting with the waitstaff and fellow patrons, etc.) but detest the actual eating of eating food in a restaurant. I try to get through that as fast and painlessly as possible so I can leave without much commotion. I even pay as soon as I order my meal (with a nice tip) so as to expedite the process, occasionally leaving the vast majority of my food on the table as I depart.

Thank you. The absolute worst is when the waitstaff first brings the breadsticks, soup, or salad. I usually excuse myself at that point and immediately make for the waiting room to fraternize with other fellow restaurateurs. If none are available there, I usually check out the dumpsters in the back for any cooks on their smoke break. Usually after 20 minutes or so I can head back in, where my entree will be waiting for me, menacingly.

Yeah this is just made up stuff for a movie scene by someone who had never been to a diner. Diners love doing all kinds of crazy substitutions and wacky shit, they even have nicknames for that kind of thing. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if in some diners a side of toast is called "chicken salad sandwich hold the chicken" just because of this movie.

I've never liked them. Food is generally bland, waitresses are too chatty, decor is generally boring, music is generally boring, clientele is normally boring and boomery. Here’s my comfy American dining experience. There’s a place called Buffalo Wild Wings and it’s got a bar area in the back. You can sit at the bar, or a Normal height seated table, or they have a few padded seat tables on the wall with barstools on one side. I like to get one of these tables and sit in the padded seat up against the wall in the early afternoon on a weekday. Preferably during baseball season when there’s an afternoon game to watch on the many tv screens around the place. I know the waitress and she gives me strong double rum and cokes and beers (if you go in the evening you can only order one drink at a time made that mistake once). And the cook comes out to chat cuz again I’m there at the slowest part of the day. So if it’s the guy I know he always hooks me up when I order wings or a sandwich or whatever I get. Waitress keeps the drinks comin and before rush hour hits I leave a big tip and head home (or to a friends or make a stop at the liquor store to keep it goin). Sometimes I go alone, sometimes I meet family or friends there and just hold court for an afternoon. It’s one of the things I’ve missed the most about life before Coronaland in 2020 because I haven’t gone in a few months.

went around 8 am alone, the guys I was travelling with wanted to sleep in. Only like 4 other patrons in there, ordered french toast with strawberries and bacon, some coffee. This is actually what "The customer is always right" comes from. Maybe in the very old days of America consumerism something like this would have happened. Could be due to a variety of reasons, up to and including the owner being a faggot. The idea came about eventually, if the customer wants to buy something you should sell it to them. Fast forward damn year 70 years and you get modern capitalism/consumerism.

No, anon. That was a movie.

That's a diner, and that kind of restaurant would indeed have a side of toast with any item on the breakfast menu. Rolls aren't for breakfast over the choice of toast, of course.

Are there literal people when it comes to substitutions? Oh yes. There are hardass cooks who don't want special orders. They may be busy and are cooking combos basically back there not by the order. They'll have a slew of eggs going, and they're plating by special number, not some randoms desire to have no butter on their toast, or 3 whites 2 yolks and so forth. Splitting orders is a another big no-no. You come in the door, the average is 1 plate per person, not 1 plate per 2 persons. They want their tips or you sit at the bar, not taking up a table. Why be so shitty? People abuse the system, and also employees steal. Old people get water, free lemon meant for tea, sugar packets meant for coffee and make free lemonade as a way to get around buying a beverage. It's easy for a flirt to skip charging for the side of sausage, or the countless refills, and there are systems like cash register combo buttons that only let them charge by the meal, or managers counting cups or plates at tables. Who knows what system they have in the back, but employee shrinkage for more tips does have a bottom line for the establishment.

Man, diners are absolutely amazing. If you go there enough, the staff begin to know you and either hook you up, or just chat with you for a bit. Either way, you can just go there and sit, drink coffee, read a news paper/play around on your phone, watch people, watch tv, etc.

My favorite is the Waffle House or the Huddle House. You can't go wrong with either and they give you all the substitutions or add-ons you could possibly ever want. They are normally extremely cheap too!

I can't wait until I get back to America and get to go to a diner myself for brunch again. My favorite meal is always a medium rare steak, three over-easy eggs, and hash browns (all the way.)

Talk about food heaven Anon.

This usually a diner will make you whatever the fuck, especially if it's a mom and pop. That's how the saying "I'm not a short order cook" came about whenever a mom or person cooking at home gets asked to make substitutions for dinner. I'm pretty sure the point of this scene is the utter preposterousness of it all especially because at the end of the day the original request for tomatoes was easier and cheaper than the potatoes or the toast, but idk I haven't seen the whole movir
