Ducks are great when stuffed with shitload of not too sweet apples and mayoram and roasted (baked?) as a whole. I mean, isn't it bit too good meat to throw it in the stew? Unless you have many of them ofc. Or unless it's some fancy kind of stew.

ye he was really fucked up and I never butchered an animal before. DESU he probably was going to die today anyways.

>>14477077
Bruh I essentially euthanized him. He was dead in literal seconds, and he was suffering before that, if I didn't kill him he would have laid around on his back writhing in pain for maybe another day or 2. I know you think the only good way to kill an animal is to inject it with poision and and see its flesh as just something to incinerate until its nothing but ash but you know what thats just not how I roll. >>14477137
I already gutted him. Also sex with dead things isn't really up my alley.

mate you did well
rip mallard frend
ignore the vegan cucks, they love animals more than humans and would rather see you go hungry than letting you eat meat.
You did well.
How'd you get all the intestines out cleanly? did that go well? flush it extra clean with water, get all that blood out. Keep the organs such as liver and heart, they're nutritious as fuck. chop it in pieces and fry it in a pan shortly, then mix with some apples and herbs, stuff the piggy, and in the oven and roast till golden, might need some oil idk how fat ducks are compared to chickens

>u did well.
I just copied youtube vids and followed sites and forums as best I could. I cut the tail and vent off paralell to the cavity and then cut an incision below the sternum (after squeezing out whatever poop was left), I first focused on removing the gizzard (which is much bigger than I realized!) and then carefully worked the guts out. I got really lucky and didn't tear any intestines inside the duck. He didn't eat much before he died because he was really screwed up and couldn't eat so that probably helped. an intestine burst outside the duck but it didn't get on the meat (THANK GOODNESS BECAUSE IT STINKS).
I rinsed him out, then removed the liver and finally the heart. I opened the gizzard and removed the grit and I'm chilling it to loosen up the gizzard membrane.
I'm leaving him in the fridge overnight as I have been told it will tenderize the meat.

What kind of apples and herbs should I use? I have crab apples on my property but would a store bought granny smith be good? The only herbs I have on hand are fresh dill and dried cilantro. I have no idea what to use outside of salt and pepper.

idk how fat gimpy is. Not only was he not fully grown, but he was runty, underweight, and also not bred for meat. I have some pekins I plan on eating but having gimpy be on deaths doorstop was a great opportunity for butchery practice.

Nope, I put him in a feed sack with a hole in it, held his head over a block, and my bf smashed his head with a 2x4 to knock him out. Then we cut his head off with a hatchet and hung him to bleed. The whole ordeal took maybe 5 seconds and no noise was made, I would be really surprised if this duck felt anything. But it definitely wasn't pretty, his eye popped out when we smashed his head in. But even with that grossness we moved quickly.

But honestly, he was suffering BAD. Like he might have lived to tomorrow or the next day, but it would have been really cruel to keep him alive.

I wasn't even sure I was gonna eat him but his organs all look fine and hes a bit bigger than I though so I decided I may as well give it a try. Will update tomorrow ;3c

Not to mention the skin is where lots of the poultry fat is, it’s precious to me. If I buy too much chicken and need to roast some I will skin them and fry the skin up to render the fat. Makes amazing chicken cracklins

there is no such thing as ethical eating. the food you buy in the store? regardless of whether it's vegan or not it's only delivered through a long supply chain wrought with human and animal misery, environmental degradation and economic exploitation.

The alternative? There is none.

Grow your own food? You have to kill the fuck out of all the mice and bugs and insects and birds that want to fuck with you. The fertilizer you use is made of animal blood, shit and bone.

Hunt? Wild animals live lives of desperate misery, contain literal diseases and parasites, and you have to murder them to eat them

parhaps you could eat roadkill

I don't know what I could have done to give him a better life. He was on the highest quality organic feed money could buy along with rotating pasture for supplemental forage (they also get fermented crops that didn't make the cut for personal use, as well as tons of beetles and other garden pests).

The rest of his flock aren't showing any signs of deterioration and seem to enjoy playing in their pool and running around their pasture. I'm new with livestock so they don't have a pond yet but having a kiddy pool and a couple other smaller pools seems to work well enough, as well as on hot days having their pasture in shade and spraying them with the hose helps a lot.

I had to separate him because he was losing weight quickly due to not being able to get food and his flock was also bullying/trampling him.
He was not super happy in his quarantine but he was at least getting food and water. His condition got worse to the point where it was clear he was dying and suffering so I put him down. The rest of his flock is about 2-3 times his size despite being the same age with all their adult feathers and beautiful full wings, where as gimpy was still covered in down.

Gimpy clearly was just handed a bad card genetically.

Only some humans want to exclude themselves from the food chain, I am a happy participant. Ethics are very personal and vary from one person to another, it is dangerous to get too attached to ethics. Just focus on the most obvious and things will be just fine.

Well honestly I planned on getting chickens but the hatchery I was planning to buy from sold out and only had ducks. Ducks are kind of advantageous as they aren't as common (which will put me at a market advantage) and allegedly naturally lay in colder climates (among other things that seemed advantageous over chickens)
I told my boyfriend he could get maybe 15 and we ended up with 40, LOL. I don't regret it though. I want to have a ton of different livestock, eventually working my way up to cattle.

>>14480824
The plan is to eventually sell eggs and breed the ducks, I'm curious to see what hybrids will be like. These are my very first livestock, my primary goal is pasture management, I really want to use animals to improve the environment. The ducks are excellent fertilizers to the pasture and my garden. I need chickens soon so they can further process their manure. If I dont hose down what they produce in their coop overnight it burns the grass, chickens are excellent at scratching and pecking through maggot filled shit so I plan to get maybe 6-12 chickens probably in spring.

Chickens will only do so much damage on a certain amount of land in amount certain time. I only want to have a few chickens and their enclosed pasture will be moved daily. If they become a garden problem I will either fence off the garden or eat the chickens. My electric fence is pretty tall as well. Not 7 feet but not much shorter.
