dungeness crab or king crab, then lobster. Blue crabs are tasty, but a pain to get the meat out.

I'm from the VA bay area, and blue crabs are good and all, but I don't think they are worth all the work. I still prefer snow or king crab legs.

bottom tier crustaceans. They literally live in poop water and they're the crustacean equivalent of carp.

I'd still eat them but you can't seriously compare them with crab/lobster/wild shrimp.

I don't think "on ice" is the best way to buy anything but frozen fish. You're look at ice in order to see the eye balls on fish, and not much else. It's not peel n eat shrimp.

Live lobster is great if you can find it but you can find lobster tails for $5 and enjoy a nice lobster roll just the same. All cold water alaskan crab will be frozen at sea and pretty much no choice there. You can get live blue crab by going to the source. If you get a permit, you can enjoy stone crab and florida lobster yourself in season. That's really fresh (they're hard to grab tho!).

But, buy it frozen and steam or bake it yourself. Or do something like not crack a frozen lobster except when it is live and keep your experiences heavenly or not at all.

If you're too far inland to have live lobsters at the supermarket then you'll want something that's been flash frozen ASAP after catching.
