You weren't trained to work the register. Employees watch 7 hours of videos and take tests before they can be a cashier. You can't be expected to know the scanner doesn't work this way.

I work closely with Loss Prevention at my store. They often let employees build up thefts, enough to charge them with a felony instead of stealing one handbag or whatever. Shoplifting, like concealing an item under a coat, is different. But for repeat offenders, the stores like Walmart or Target will let you build up a case using facial recognition and such. I wonder how face masks affects that now.

But anyway, I’ve probably stolen a few items from the checkout without noticing. For some reason my local Shoprite is terrible at checking under the cart. I’ve probably paid for 10% of the times I’ve boughten water or soda.
Nothing wrong with doing cheap methods during urgent times, like doing pretend scans or holding two items for a scan. If anything act dumb.

My local Walmart used to have a person at the exit that would ask to see your receipt if you had more that one or two plastic grocery bags of stuff. They would do a quick spot check of a couple items, usually anything big or expensive like electronics or bulk pet food.

Now that covid is upon us they don't check shit. The self checkout also used to have a scale in the bagging area and if you scanned something and it didn't sense the weight it would halt the process. Lately I pay for most of my items but simply don't scan the most expensive things. Have saved hundreds

my store has an app that lets you scan your shit as you shop, then scan at the self checkout so its super fast. The flaw is the employee only comes over and manually scans 3 items to confirm you actually scanned it.

They can't scan things like produce or bulk goods, so its basically free if you want to be a nigger.

lmao, this was not my experience, but i wasn't a cashier per se. as stock crew manager I had to sub in as manager on duty all summer while other people went on vacation. if we were busy (particularly the 1st, 2nd, and 15th of the month) i'd spend significant time on a register. no training, it sucked.
