Yup. This was the whole reason Claire (and I think Brad, too) left and renegotiated their contracts once their shows got popular. They went from salaried employees to freelance contractors (I'm pretty sure Rick is one too). Both had been at BA for a while and weren't making great money before that. Others, like Chris and Delany, have other managerial roles/have just been at BA for a while and are popular, so of course they have better contacts. Time at BA, climbing the promotion ladder, and popularity affects pay. Andy only just got a good contract after several years of work.

Sohla basically took an entry-level editor role that was salaried, which has video appearances as part of the job, and got mad that people she saw as less experienced than herself were making more/had better jobs. She hasn't even been at BA a year. It's kind of sad - she's definitely a better chef than most of them, was becoming pretty popular, and had her own show in the works. It's very common that contracts are lower for women in same job/same everything, where salary offered is lower. Though it may not often help at all, the man is more likely to counter offer, see an attorney before signing, negotiate for higher, ie self-advocate. Would it have helped someone who wasn't even yet at the same level of pay of those racking in more traffic already? Negotiations could have backfired into just looking for someone else. It's when contract renewal happens that someone has more leverage to shop themselves elsewhere or not. And, that's honestly how free market should work in entertainment. This is the super fucky part IMO. Sohla is honestly a much better chef than most people at BA. Her past career failures aside, she had a good resume. But she signed up for a basic, low-level food editor job in the TK. She knew exactly what she was getting into and what was expected of her.

She became popular pretty fast, and was clearly busting her ass. She was at BA less than a year and got a 20% raise very quickly. She had her own show in the works (there were like 3 episodes in development or whatever), and if it was successful she would have been able to restructure her contract like others did.

She had a chimpout instead. Turned down a on-the-spot $20k raise, and cried foul at the fact that people who had been at BA for longer made more than her. She was simply impatient. If she felt her experience deserved more, she should have tried to apply for a job accordingly.
