Where I live most pizza place put large "pepperoni" (which I'm certain are salami slices, yet they still call in pepperoni pizza) slices under the cheese, and they make them overlap each other so that there a perfect continuous layer of meat. Thick crust is the norm too.
That's what I grew up eating and that's what makes it the perfect 'za
