People have overinterpreted the term to include many things that were never intended. If you take a cultural concept and use your market power to prevent people immersed in the culture from benefiting from it economically, that is appropriation. If you eat something and learn to use it in a domestic setting, that us not.

Only one I can think of is the Yellow River Cantata by Xian Xinghai, who the Xinghai Conservatory in Guangzhou is named after. Even then, it wasn't considered innovative in 1939 for anything except that it was the first orchestral treatment of some certain Chinese folk songs. Asians force their kids to play musical instruments at an early age and even though the majority of them don't continue to play after high school, they tend to excell more than the average American because of how strict their parents are. American parents are too loose because they "want our kids to have it easier because muh parents were too strict" and are too afraid to discipline them for fear of the state taking them away anyways.
