Come to think of it, this price difference kind of makes sense if you consider that perhaps the store-bought lasagnas also use cheap ass ingredients.

Niggas always be like "it's cheaper bro" but then never tell you you have to buy 60 dollars of ingredients and supplies and shit.

sure I get it, you make it yourself and if you did it all by the pound you could bring the cost down to say like 5 bucks. but you aren't spending just 5 dollars for that burger, you're spending all the other money too. where as you can just go to like maccas or whatever and spend 3 bucks on a burger and be done with it.

and yes, I also understand it allows you to make more than one, but who's sitting there and gonna make 10 burgers and eat them all? no one, and you'd sick of them by the 3rd day. if I want to just eat one burger, I just go and buy one because it is cheaper. and also does typically taste better and at worst just as good as something home made

Yep. Exactly this. You've either gotta be autistically obsessed at the store about putting together a menu for the week that you WILL NOT deviate from, or it becomes cost ineffective. It completely disregards having a craving that day, your friends inviting you out to watch the game, etc. And these people assume you know how to cook all of these dishes and aren't going to get some bungled shit facsimile of whatever you tried to make.

I can only respect the "eat in for every meal" people if they're true poorfags with no other choice or in a family/relationship scenario where it's a guarantee they will not only be stuck in at home but have other people to eat with so they're not eating the same slop for a week straight to save a buck.

I'd say 70%+ of the time that someone tells me they're a really good cook, they're not, and I have to smile and tell them it's wonderful as not to offend.

I pretty much firmly believe that unless you work in cooking or have at some point, you're probably not a good cook, just used to making the same shit you've always made.

Not having 40 back of mind recipes and an inherent knowledge of how to squeeze the best cost of every ingredient doesn't mean I lack a basic life skill.

Plus there's opportunity cost. The time I spend learning how to make all of these dishes to save $3 a week is not as useful as getting my certification on a new item in my field, where I'll make an extra $10 an hour in a raise. This is how people stay poor. Focusing on low-value savings.

As someone who rarely cooks outside of throwing a pizza in the oven and works way more hours than I really want to, growing up in pretty much a freezer and fast food household, even buying a bag of chicken tendies and throwing them on hamburger buns for 7 bucks is cheaper than buying out all of the time. A bag of chicken and fish planks can last me at least 2 weeks if I don't gorge myself. I also bring shit in from home that I make every once in a while. Even if you buy a lot of store bought shit, it is much more cheap than eating out every day and you'd have to be retarded or trolling to think otherwise. The only reason it's more expensive is because you had to buy a bunch of ingredients that you didn't have before and you don't cook often enough so they go to waste or you buy way too big of proportions and instead of making a meal for a day or two, you make enough to last a week and then throw it all out because you're bored of it after 2 days. I know because I do both of these lmao. But at least I make a delicious fucking meal and if I had time or cared more I'd only buy and cook shit homemade. It tastes better. Anything that isn't professional level cooking is literally just following directions. Stop being a faggot and cook something.

You dont have to be autistic to look in your fridge, see tomatos, onion, and garlic thats about to go bad and say "oh i can make a red sauce out of this". Literally just use your sense of taste and smell and throw whatever together. If youre following recipes/memorizing recipes youre a shit cook. You utilize what you have on hand and leftovers. I don't know how many times I've seen a recipe on /ck/ and decided to cook it right then and there because I already had all of the ingredients. my spice cabinet is loaded and I've got all of the baking ingredients I could need, so other than that I just need a handful of things. Try keeping the following $13 of ingredients in stock in your fridge:
>celery
>carrots
>potatoes
>onions
>tomatoes
>fresh cilantro or basil (depending on cuisine. I have a both and one is basil plant, but prefer to buy cilantro since it will flower and ruin itself)
>butter

once you've got that all you really need is meat and eggs and you've got hundreds of dishes. If you keep dry stuff like rice, lentils and beans around and some canned stuff, you won't run out of recipes. I was just pointing out that you could cover most of your bases for like $13 and then after that you're only short a couple of ingredients for literally thousands of recipes. if you don't need meat, then you can rely on dry ingredients which last a long time so you don't need to worry about buying or eating nearly as frequently

>cooking for one or two at home is really easy and does not take long at all.
Wow it's almost like someone paid you and trained you to learn how to cook, as opposed to s normal person who has to waste their own time and money learning! What a concept.

This is why you people don't get it. I don't have years of experience cooking so my food is going to be laborious, come out bad, and I'll inefficiently use ingredients to make more bad dishes therefore driving up cost.

This goes back to the car analogy earlier in the thread. If you're a trained mechanic, of course fixing your car is easy. If you are a white collar office worker and someone hands you a carburetor and toolkit, odds are it's gonna suck or take forever as you have to watch the basics on YouTube or something.

>> No.14136996

>>14136956
it's not difficult to learn. I only learned a fairly limited set of recipes and did them over and over and over. I am a white collar office worker now. cooking at home is much easier because you don't have to juggle nearly as much. my point was it really doesn't take long to cook just build up some confidence with your chosen recipe and learn to clean up as you go and you'll find it takes surprisingly little time to cook a meal and have a clean kitchen. once you're used to the tasks with preparing a meal you'll figure out when you can utilize downtime to do other shit you'll do at home anyways. cooking breakfast takes very little active time actually working with the food. if I'm entertaining guests while I'm cooking, it's really easy to do part of a recipe, rinse and put away whatever, then go back to chatting/drinking/whatever while I devote rather minimal attention to the stove. often it's the first part of a recipe that requires the most attention anyways

>> No.14137023

Only people who have a lot of experience cooking can do all of that without any effort. To gain that experience you either have to be a neet or housewife who devotes most of his time to cooking or a professional.

>clean up as I'm working
Gotta learn how to multitask while cooking otherwise you will fuck it up. This can't happen without experience.

>It's not difficult to make good food
Maybe not difficult but time consuming if you are new to it.

>I can buy the same fresh ingredients at the grocery store

and how are you going to know what to buy without experience? Printing out ingredient lists from recipies is annoying as all fuck and you will end up with stuff you are never going to use again because the layman doesn't have enough experience to know what the hell to buy.

I mean, yeah, you can put in the effort to learn but the point is that you really have to if you don't want to.

It's cheaper if you buy in bulk and cook everyday. It's expensive if it's a one time occasion.

How do you fuck up a steak? There are literal guides and timers out there to tell you how long to cook a steak for each "doneness" get some crushed garlic, shalots, olive oil, and salt/pepper and boom a fucking perfect steak. God I hate faggots that think cooking is rocket science.

Apparently this is not factored into the cost of the steak for idiots like you. But wait, I'm sure he's supposed to "have this on hand."

Chicken parmesan?
Alfredo?
Cheesy Chicken rice?
Shake and bake chicken?
Chicken soup?
Yeah definitely poverty tier. Keep eating 3 dollar hamburgers and frozen lasagna. That's high dining right there.

Or it's you just being buttblasted, either that you think someone should be able to whip up a perfect steak with things on hand, or that two/three primary ingredients and a bunch of sauce makes a good dish.

I don't know which poster you are.

Shallots are just sweeter combo of onions and garlic. It's not a necessity just a taste preference. Who just buys a steak and thinks "yeah, this is all I'll need." And then bitch online when its not the same as a steak made in a professional kitchen.
Also, pretty sure the chicken guy gave you more variety for home meals that don't require a bunch of obscure ingredients that you bitches about earlier. So you want variety but you also don't want to recognize most dishes with Chicken as the main ingredient have starches to go along with it? Switch out the starches for veggies and you'll still be getting the same mix and match that most restaurants would serve you because it's not economical to give you high end shit for the price you're paying for the meal.

>Who just buys a steak and thinks "yeah, this is all I'll need."
Honestly, I'd imagine most people feel that way. You throw on some salt & pepper, maybe some butter, throw them on the grill, heat them as long as it takes for someone to feel like they're too pink or not pink, boom, done. That's how a normal person cooks a steak.

You don't get it because you're so used to investing a bunch of time in your cooking or have practiced it down to your own personal perfection, but this is why steak houses exist - because it's 100x better than you or your neighbor throwing a ribeye from Kroger on the grill until you say "welp it's done."

>Also, pretty sure the chicken guy gave you more variety for home meals that don't require a bunch of obscure ingredients that you bitches about earlier.
What he listed is not going to be better than going out to eat. It's not going to be tastier. It's economical, but not tasty. It's passable. I've never argued you can't buy shit in bulk and save money, but stop acting like you're an artisanal cook for chicken, rice, and sauce.

>I'd imagine most people
So, nothing concrete to back this claim of yours up, just a "gut feeling" that people who want a steak are retarded enough not to look up the best way to cook a steak. I invest like 10 minutes total to cook my entire steak meal. It's not some fucking ritual that takes hours of prep time. Take it out of the freezer the night before, let it thaw overnight, marinate in onions and sometimes Worcestershire sauce. Come home slap it on heated skillet and cook veggies with it.
Listen anon it's okay to admit you're just a dumb nigger that refuses to take responsibility for your own life, but don't assume everyone else is like your sorry ass. And the Mexican in the kitchen cooking your steak also doesn't use gourmet ingredients or superior culinary skills to create your food. It's an investment of time learning the fastest technique that will deliver subpar satisfaction for as many guests as possible.

Bro, all it is, is a decent price for a better meal than I'm gonna make. That's all I've been saying. Motherfuckers insist every home cooked meal has this innate wonderful quality and cheapness, when it doesn't. I don't know what I'm doing. You do. I don't want to waste the time to save a few bucks.

Do you seriously not have olive oil, salt, or fucking pepper in your kitchen? If you're lazy you can keep garlic indefinitely too. There's a reason no one factors the cost in. All of those things can be bought in bulk and the price for the small amount you use in a given meal is negligible.

The UK. Pack of 20% fat mince, £1.50. Veg about £1 for a tomato, cucumber and lettuce (I also had gherkisn but that would have added about 50p to the cost for a jar). Burger buns, about 40p. American Cheese slices, 70p or so. Already had mayo and ketchup.

How much does a £1.50 pack of mince weigh in le UK, on average?
In the US, six, 100g (precooked weight) cheeseburgers would cost me:
$3.40 for the mince (1⅔ lbs at $1.99/lb)
75¢ for the buns ($1 for a pack of 8 from the dollar store, using six; alternately, 60¢ as a pack of 8 from Lidl costs 79¢)
60¢ for the cheese ($1.99 for a pack of 20 from Lidl)
Total cost: $4.75

With fixings (LTO, ketchup, mayo, mustard, etc) it'd cost a bit more, but not by much. Maybe a dollar or so more.
