OP, they were once quite inexpensive. And, they were large capacity, so poor people loved to fill them up with a big lemonade or iced tea. They're a faux-Country life kind of sensibility, and could actually be nostalgic. Before there was tupperware, plastic wrap and other ways to store leftovers as much as we do today, you collected and kept most everything you used once, just in case. So, many people grew up drinking from jelly jars intended to be reused like that.
During canning season, you'll make a batch of 20-30 items, and by end of next season, you'd have emptied those jars, one by one, by one, and whatever. Not everyone drank from lead crystal at every opportunity. China and crystal were kind of fancy. They might have drank instead from metal glasses, pottery mugs, and the like, for ordinary reasons or for outside.

Are they really great? Well, they used to be better of course. But, now, they have a thin lip and can chip glass in rough handling. It's the first thing I kind of check when I get it in a restaurant. People adore it in restaurants, though because it has a built in refill already, no need to signal a waitress as often, and those plastic glasses in food service are gross and only for use with a straw.

Food service 'mason' glassware is not ready for canning and is thicker than canning jars.
>And, they were large capacity, so poor people loved to fill them up with a big lemonade or iced tea.
The largest mason jars were always 1/2 gallon and they are still available. Pickles mostly but we used em for potatoes.

>grew up drinking from jelly jars intended to be reused like that.
You used to be able to use Miracle Whip and Helmann's jars for canning, and the lids worked, they were metal with a paper insert. MW for large-mouth, Hellman's for small-mouth.
Then they began making the jars really thing glass, and now they're plastic of course.
Hellmann's lids still work well on small-mouth jars, MW lids now have a different threading so they don't work. I've found off-brand products that do.
That used to be done deliberately to co-incide with canning and because of the tooling. That is if people canned a lot of small mouth jars, they'd be more likely to buy Hellmann's mayo.

The world was a diffferent place. Not quite as you say but you're in the right general direction.

Yeah you're right there were 3qt jars, but those were for hot-water pickling not pressure canning I think. You can see it's not near as strong.
I collect old ones from the second-hand stores in a rural area, so I bet mine are mostly pre 1980s. You can tell the newer ones and many are lower quality, the one I'm drinking from now>>14101766 doesn't even sit level.

I love canning and mason jars though, so g-d useful.
You don't need to store them with the rings. After 4 decades of canning (helped mom and dad when I was a wee lad) I've never found more than a few popped lids, and usually on veggies that I try to cook as little as possible. Like maybe 5 if that.

The newer lids and rings also seem to be cheaper but they work just as well, have to be more careful centering them.

“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.

Disagree, plenty of people aren't claiming to give one shit about which original vinyl press makes the best rendition of Cortez the Killer, they are mocking some soyjack for doing so. And it deserves mockery.

>It serves no conversational function and imparts no information
It does. It informs other people that being engaged in conversation with said Hipster will likely veer off into the direction the hipster attempting to mog on you for some obscure shit, and the Hipster will steer the conversation into that direction with annoying aggression, thus one should avoid the fag.

>elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).
We do know.
Clothes that you don't wear but have a special significance only the Hipster knows
Music you don't listen to but which has a special provenance that you are ignorant of
Actions which have no objective meaning other than making the HIpster a legend in their own mind and among their 7 androgynous friends.
It's insufferable.

>literally anything that annoys you.
Hipsters annoy everyone, especially other hipsters, especially their 7 androgynous friends.

>you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it?
No, the rest of us wear the clothes that are available for a certain price. We don't comb the Goodwill fighting with pee-smelling old ladies for them.
The Hipster is insecure, so they seek identity in the objects around them. Normal people don't assign that much value to old flannel shirts or coffee beans shat from meerkats. Hipsters do that.

Hipsters are the Other, that's their point.
