Starting with a pound of dark air cured burley, plus unused midribs from the last cook (adds bulk and fiber)

Here's a closer look at those midribs
Midribs contain far less nicotine than the lamina (leafy part of leaves), but without a little midrib, the snus will fall apart in your mouth. Embarrassing! Your face would be so red!
So we're gonna add some. Dark air cured burley already has a pretty beefy nic content, and without the rib its actually a little overwhelming.

Before all those moms browsing develop a stinky, please remember that snus is legally recognized as a food product by the Swedish FDA

I've experimented with homegrown tobacco, and while I've successfully taken my tobac from seed to snus twice now, getting a whole pound of beautiful, professionally grown leaf for $14 blows waiting three months out of the fucking water. It's still your home-baked bread, even if you didn't grow the wheat yourself.
Tobacco is also taxing on the soil, and I can't justify having something taking up valuable perennial veggie space.
A year ago I used a coffee grinder. Blender works better (this is a cheapo, would love to toy with grinds on a prof. speed blender. Blending these sounds like running over your cat but it's just the dry sticks snapping

The next couple of steps weren't visually interesting, just mixing water, table salt, and tobacco flour and putting the mix into a nylon roasting bag.
Some things I've learned about the ratios involved:
>many online recipes use a 1:1:0.1 Water:Flour:NaCl, but using a little more water than this improves the final texture considerably
>If you were able to grind the tobacco down into flour, it is dry. Dont worry about additional moisture throwing the ratio off balance

Snus is a moist tobacco product placed in the upper lip. It is similar to dip, but is steamed instead of fermented, and does not demand spitting.
So, no.

Everything gets loaded up into the instant pot for 30 minutes. This is our first cook, and our goal here is to steam the tobacco so that everything is ready for alkalization.

Alkalizer goes in between the first and second cooks - the second cook is three times longer (1 hour and 30 minutes) than the first cook. The first cook is really just to get the tobacco wet. Yes and no to both; I've found that snus is better fresh out of the fridge, but so long as it's in an airtight container like a mason jar, it won't dry out. Most of the reason to keep it in the fridge comes from the snus can being an imperfect storage for moist tobacco, and so the fridge keeps the cans in good shape. It's about the limitations of manufacturing. We can take a little more care when we work on things at home.

I do age it for about a week, taking little samples day by day. It's totally fine to use fresh, but holy shit does it fucking kick. Aging it in wood balances the moisture and adds a smooth flavor, so I have a clean, empty drawer to air it in before it goes in the jar or the fridge.

Yes. Snus without some kind of alkaline substance is not snus, does not hit like snus, does not sting like snus. You can buy washing soda at the grocery store or make your own with baking soda - these are two ways of getting sodium carbonate.

I've run little thought experiments in my head. It wont do anything to compromise the snus itself, but the flavor of the tobacco changes dramatically when cooked. You can kinda tell what sort of flavor your starting aroma will develop into, but with herbal teas it's a mixed bag.
Extracts, spirits and liquors are totally fine though. I'm adding rum to this batch to flavor.
Which brings up something important - adding a flavor at the end ensures consistency in the product, while you might fuck it all up if it's too soon.

If you put a VERY small amount in, it won't kill you. The thing that makes nicotine a cool alkaloid is how little of it you need to take effect.
Compare this with caffiene, which is capable of being absorbed through all the same passages as nicotine, but is best taken by drinking - because you need so much more to create an effect. Caffiene is totally absorbable through the lip, through the nose, and everywhere nicotine is, though.
So the idea isn't totally insane. There were a couple energy drinks that included some nicotine, and nicotine water was almost approved for sale as a smoking cessation/focus enhancing product. It's just that the other modes of use are so much nicer.
Give it a try if you want, but you're on your own. Research the safe effects and don't be a dumbass.

Even with the rum added in, the snus is still very dry and crumbly. It can be hand baked (formed into a little ball) and pinched, but it takes a while - for dippers, the feeling is like the can of cope snuff you forgot about in your glove box.

That's a matter of opinion. My 90+ year old granny smoked like a train for most of her life, and past generations lived with coal and wood fires for heat and cooking for most of the year. Recent studies have indicated that not everyone's lungs are equal, and some people are blessed with having lungs that repair themselves more efficiently than others.
>Go make some snus!
Bitch I might!

Good thread OP. I live in South Carolina and am intrigued. I may have to pick up some local tobacco and try this. I quit smoking tobacco years ago.

The taste test. Here are my notes, 30 minutes in:
>buzz is intense but not overwhelming, and in a week when the snus is tame will be perfect
>taste of the base tobacco is very chocolaty
>the vanilla nut flavor has overpowered the rum, in a good way
>salt is perfect and doesnt need correcting
>flavor is still a little shallow
>prilla holds together but snus still needs kneading
Let's address these points!

>>14055381
The lungs are fragile. I will admit that some people are born luckier than others, and that chain cigarette smokers and alcoholics who smoke throw the statistics way to the side of certain death. It's like including suicides in handgun death statistics.
This being said, you're gonna love snus, and wonder why you ever smoked to begin with.

Cinnamon and coffee are two flavors that boost the warm notes of rum. Spiced rum is almost always made with cinnamon, and coffee and rum work well enough to sell millions of bottles of kahlua each year.
Xylitol is a sweetener that improves your dental hygiene instead of rotting it, and has a strong antibacterial effect. It also has a mild cooling presence that's softer than menthol - think ice cold water instead of spearmint gum. All good qualities for this snus.

Start with Göteborgs Rapé Lös, General Lös, Ettan Portion, and Thunder Frosted. Anything else you pick up is your own choice, but these are great snuses that will start you off well, and they cover all the very "basic" flavors (Juniper and Herbs, Bergamot and Pepper, Tobacco, and Mint). Ignore anything that advertises high strength, and only purchase fruit flavors after careful reading of reviews - these can vary wildly, some are intolerably sweet and some have less flavor than a cherry's tombstone.

Uh oh, did a cute anime girl just poop on my snus??? Haha tricked you, that's simply the new flavorants whipped into solution with a bit more glycerin :) Let's keep going.

Kneading is the quickest way to improve your snus's textural qualities, and separates the boys from the men.
This is the same snus after kneading. I've added water as needed, but once its reached the consistency I want, I stop and put it away to tame down. This takes about three days at room temperature, about a week in the fridge.

That's it! We're done!
All that's left is for the snus to "tame", meaning let it sit uncovered or loosely covered for a period of time. This does the following things:
>allows the fiber and protein in the snus to simultaneously seep out of the grains and dry a little, improving the texture and compactness of the snus dramatically
>allows all of the sodium carbonate to react with rest of the tobacco, releasing the remainder of the ammonia and stabilizing nicotine strength
>allows the flavors to better come together

If anyone has any questions, now's a great time to ask.
I'm glad you all enjoyed the thread. My tobacco came from wholeleaftobacco, but other sites might be cheaper or have favorable shipping to your area. In the United States, unprocessed tobacco is treated as an agricultural product and not as a tobacco product, and is therefore exempt from all taxes related to the latter - if you live in Canada, South America, or Europe, the rules might be wildly different.

If you want to make dip instead, follow my post here >>14054847. As a general rule, dip is a lot more forgiving than snus.

General original, wintergreen, and white, all with expiration dates of late June. All were refrigerated when I bought them. Right now trying the original and I like it. Might take some getting used to having something tucked in my lip. Has a peppery taste if I could use a word to describe it.

Black pepper is one of the dominant flavors in General, so you're completely right. The other is bergamot, or the citrus taste of earl grey.

Tobacco's arrival into Europe matches almost perfectly with the onset of the scientific and industrial revolution.
It's a powerful nootropic, and using it to help develop the most complicated societies on Earth just to let some fat in Congress tell you you can't have it anymore is the nastiest example of indian giving ever done.
Tobacco has made us great, and countless strangers have been made friends, endless conversations drought up out of nothing by a shared cigar, pipe, cigarette, pinch of snuff. It is nature's gift to conviviality - just happens to have some bad delivery methods.

Historically, Swedish sailors would bring back spices and ingredients from faraway places, like nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, citrus, and port wine, and their wives or mothers (tfw no fat scandi mommy 2 make snus 4 u :[) would add these to snus.
Other flavors came from what was available in Sweden (lingonberry, juniper, herbs, elderflower, wood), and other flavors came from snus's history as a derivative product of nasal snuff (rose, jasmine, violet).
Local flavors won out, probably because they were what swedes were used to, and because the Swedish crown banned importation of tobacco but allowed and encouraged unsupervised farming of tobacco on Swedish farms (this was super fucking uncommon in Europe). Combine local Swedish tobacco with abundant local ingredients and the advent of industry and Ljunglöv's process, and you have the beginnings of the golden age of snus - hundreds of local brands unique to each region. No need for mommy to ferment snus for you anymore.
Bergamot probably hung around because it was traded in huge volumes across Europe by perfumers and confectioners, and would have been a commonly known aroma despite not originating nor being growable in large volumes, even in Skåne, Sweden's sunny south. Colonization probably made more basic southeast asian spices available too.
After WWII, Sweden monopolized the snus industry, and all flavors of snus were brought to a panel of judges who were forced to choose their favorites for the new tobacco monopoly to manufacture. General, the spicy bergamot snus, was one of these, and bergamot was forever cemented in many Swedes minds as "the" snus.
There might be some nutmeg in General, is what I'm getting at. Makes sense historically.

I've used snusme.com and snuscentral.org, but stuck to snusme before I went full craft crazy. The prices are better, the website is cleaner, the shipping is around $10 less than SC for equivalent weight, and the selection is almost exactly the same.
I know they're having a 20% off their entire stock sale, so jump on that while you can.
Other websites are either more expensive than either or cater to Europeans who have to have snus smuggled in as it is illegal (Wow thank you EU!!! You kept me safe from that nasty snus let's have Marlboro Menthol to celebrate)
You will have to verify your card with snusme. I, [anonymous], personally ensure that they will not steal your money.

You should expect your snus in about 3 days if you're American, 60 days if you're Canadian. If you're a Canuck, try to limit the amount you purchase to less than two rolls or customs will make sure you pay every last fucking cent of tax, meaning the whole endeavor was worthless.

I do, and I've never had a problem with their leaf, but I'm fully aware that the qualities we look for in good cigar leaf (moisture, uniformity, pliability, oiliness, burn) either dont matter or are intentionally destroyed in the process of snusmaking.
This being said, I have rolled a cigarillo with their air cured, and it's got good flavor but is EXTREMELY spitty for the first third.
