14022966 No.14022966 [Reply] [Original]

I think I’m about to give up on scotch. All the ones I’ve had hve been disappointing and not worth the price.
>Glenmorangie 10
>Laphroaig 10
>Arberlour A’bunadh
They haven’t come cheap and don’t impress me at all. The bourbons I have tastes better and even a $20 bottle of rum is more exciting than any of these drinks.
I am going to get one more before I stop with the scotch meme. Have I just been getting trash scotch? (They’re all hyped up, welll reviewed). What do you recommend to convince me that I shouldn’t give up on scotch?

>> No.14022981

>>14022966
glenmorangie and aberlour 10 get btfo by bourbon pretty easily but you didn't like laphroaig? if you don't like smoke or peat then you can probably skip scotch and just check out other aged spirits.

>>14022966
Those 3 bottles should last you awhile (the bottom two aren't exactly casual drinking whiskey), so yeah, try other things. That's a respectable starting whiskey collection to show off when you have guests over.

You just like sweet booze.

honestly, that's a pretty big spread, the glenmorangie being really light, the laphroaig super peaty, and the aberlour being a sherry bomb. and you're right, those bottles are all well-regarded at their price point.

you probably just don't like scotch. and given that you prefer all your bourbons to your scotches, the scotch you'd most like would probably be middle-of-the-road stuff like highland park.

Plenty of scotches lack that. Your advice should have been to look into lowland or speyside varieties, and avoid islay.

No. I like Redbreast, I like dry red wine, I like gin, l like rye. I just like flavor. Glenmorangie was nice for all of two drinks, the honey impressed me, but then it just flattened to base whiskey flavor. Laphroaig is just smoke, little of anything else comes through. A’bunda Is by far the most dissappointing, where’s the fucking sherry “bomb”? It’s like a slight, almost perceptible nothing. Might as well drink actual sherry and it’ll cost a fraction of the price. There seems to be more variation between bourbon (woodford, four roses, knob creek, eagle rare) than there has been in these scotches (with the exception of peat which woukd be nice if it were accompanied by something else). I'm asking for recs on a scotch that won’t disappoint. I’ve heard bad things about Glendronach in general, but the 18 seems to be highly rec’d. Will that actually be the sherry bomb of promise?

Yea, Glenmorangie is the least flavourful scotch out there. You should stick to their cask finishes.
>Laphroaig is just smoke, little of anything else comes through
That's not true. Try light-medium peat stuff like Springbank, Highland Park, Benromach, Tomintoul (Peaty Tang), Talisker.

I don't think you're going to get much more sherry flavour than you had in A’bunda. Especially if you go older, where there'll be more wood influence. In any case it is a very intense whisky.

Longrow Peated is this. It has a wonderful smoke and lemon oil balance going for it, despite being heavily peated. It is equally peaty to Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg yet has much more non-peat flavor going on in it than those.

That’s gonna be a big no from me. Bourbon is definitely more samey, as the rules for bourbon making limits the distillers options.
If you like wine, I would recommend trying some of the wine finished scotch. Like Arran’s wine finish series

As many other guys suggested just go for different spirits instead. Whisky is very easy to get into, because of the huge hype it had. But that led to some askworthy developments in the industry anyways. Also most other spirits are much more straight forward when it comes to taste. Especially brandies like cognac, argmagnac, brandy de jerez or even calvados. But the availability of those isn't even quite as good as scotch. And with most unpopular things it not that easy to get some good suggestions.
