When a dish is served with a bowl of basic white rice, it's meant to be enjoyed as it's been prepared. The chef has considered the flavors they want you to experience and prepared your food in such a way. Sushi is another example. The chef has already put wasabi and shit on it because that's the taste combo and texture they were going for. To dump a fuck ton of soy sauce onto your specially prepared sushi is considered rude and ungrateful to the chef's hard work.
