I always make sure that I have a little piece on my person in case I meet someone new.

Sometimes 18th century recipes can be confusing. I never know how much nutmeg is too much to add so I usually just use the whole thing. This is fine up until I added too much to my stockfish.

You should get a feel for it.
The issue with a lot of old cooking is they didn't have the same set of standardized measurements. So it's fine to just kinda "eyeball it"
The beauty of this is you change things up every time. Adding a little more or less to suit your tastes. You cook the same dish enough, with these little variations, and you'll eventually hit a sweet spot where you absolutely crush it.
