Alright here's a question, is Sierra Nevada considered hipster bullshit? It's true they do make IPA's, but the company has been around since the 80's and you can get it pretty much anywhere in the country. Doesn't seem nearly as pretentious as most IPA's. So is it hipster bullshit?

Wondering because I'm currently drinking a Sierra Nevada Torpedo

fin du monde was good, any belge tripel is good. chimay white or blue would be a nice step from there. delirium is good too, red is nice if you like cherries. local brews on tap are usually better though if you have a good brewery near you.

If you never had any beer or alcohol before, avoid IPAs. I'd recommend a radler (big squeeze by UFO is the best) or a heffe like HB or a stout/porter if you like chocolate/coffee. All beer tastes different.
If you don't care specifically about beer and just want to get wasted then just get a mixed drink. Assuming again you were pure until 21.

I'd still recommend the same. I love a good red ale and stout. I mostly drink local now so I can't really give you some good insight as to brands to watch for. OP's pic is amazing if you want to try high volume though with all 10+ beers you will have alcohol flavor. Tripels are probably my favorite beer, quads are very spiceful.

Yeah I'm defibetly not interested in IPAs, I've tasted steel reserve and corona and didnt care for either, I had a hefe(I think) that I liked alright.

I'd stay with ales and wheats(hefe) then if that's what you're into. As far as what to get it depends where you're at. I like UFO, New Belgium, Yuengling, Victory, PBC (not pbr).
Just buy some shit that's within your range and see what you like. Best bet is grab some liters from your liquor store depending on location and see what you like.

Was in the mood for bock and tried the Duckstein Rubin.
This is probably the most boring bock I've ever had. It's like they tried to capture the Becks demographic. It's not offensive or anything, but just absolutely mediocre middle of the road when bock is something you go for when you want nice smokey flavours with lots of character.
This beer just feels like it's scared of expressing itself, I'm kinda upset I bought it with how overpriced it is. 7€ for a 4-pack is just retarded for how little it offers.

Why would you ever ask for beer recommendations here? Not only will you not be able to obtain what other people are drinking, but beer is so easy to get into. Go to your local bottle shop, pick a random 6 beers every week and you'll be done in a year. From there it's beer tourism, home brewing or bust.

The problem with trying spirits is a combination of expense and bottle size. You can't afford to try everything, and what you do try you are stuck with for a while.
The problem with wine is the range and season. You could drink a bottle a day but it doesn't matter because there are more wines coming out than that, and your knowledge base degrades each year since quality changes every year. Not to mention the guesswork involved with ageing.

Just try every beer.

mass produced ipas just aren't good. you need to get special releases from local breweries or go to a specialty bottle shop and ask what they recommend from what they have in stock. If I had to pick one you can find in grocery stores I'd say mikkeler, but I live in the city they're located so not sure if their availability Nationwide. generally speaking I'd say pick an east coast brewery because they are just better at the style, though my absolute favorite is a west coast brewery that only sells at their taprooms (fieldwork)

You could be right about local IPAs being better (obviously they are from a freshness perspective), but it's not very useful to be able to build an argument with local breweries that few have heard of. Hyper-local IPAs aren't very good here unfortunately.

Mikkeller has good labels, I'll give you that, I was considering putting them on the list.

Also I agree that Omnipollo is manbaby but they still make some very fun beers to drink.

After moving to Germany I was underwhelmed by the beer. I would describe German beer as "consistently OK". Although it seems that they are now starting to enter the hip & edgy meme beer scene that has been exploding across the ocean for the past few years. It's for the better in my opinion. I had an IPA the other day (pic not related) and I realized how much I actually missed it, they just have so little presence here.

Pic is what I found at the grocery store. I'll report back about it later.

Thanks to the Reinheitsgebot it's pretty hard for there to be straight up bad beer, but it also limits what you can do with additives on the other end of the spectrum. If you want exotic flavours you simply won't find them here unless you import.
That doesn't meant German beer is boring though, you are simply looking at the wrong stuff. Go to a speciality store and ask them for recommendations, what you can randomly find in grocery stores isn't going to be bad, but it's also not really good either.

Beer is by law considered a staple food in Germany, it's why despite Corona many breweries decided to still keep operate like they normally would.
I always thought it's kind of crazy how drinking copious amounts of beer is such a normalized when I visit my German relatives.

It's not uncommon at all for parents to give their kids beer for dinner and many, many, of the more traditional social events call for drinking litres upon litres of beer. It's like their entire society revolves and was created around beer. While the rest of the world casually plays beer pong the Germans make a sport out of who can empty their Mass or even bigger pitchers the fastest in one go without stopping. Seeing relative accomplished guys in their 50s wearing expensive suits just down a 2.5L pitcher in one go and it being considered normal is all kinds of insane imo

Most standard beer is around 5-7%, which seems pretty middle of the road.
You won't really get much higher than that outside of the handful of styles that repeat the fermentation process multiple times like IPAs or Doppelbock, which can go all the way upwards of 10%.
For something to be sold as Oktoberfest Bier it needs to be exactly 6% ABV +-0.1 for example.

>>13950500
That's not really the norm anymore to be fair. You still have a bunch of these crazy beer traditions surviving in the more rural areas and they obviously run rampart and are played up to 11 by the more traditional fraternities that still do rapier duels and all that shit, but a lot of that sort of culture just doesn't have a place anymore in the modern world.

Drinking a 2L pitcher (a Karaffe) without setting down or spilling any is kind of like a rite of passage in many German fraternities and sometimes still done at rural festivals where people race, either solo or in teams as a relay, to see who can finish each of their pitchers the fastest.
There's a fuckton of rules and culture surrounding the ceremonial drinking of beer in Germany, it's honestly a really interesting topic that doesn't get talked about very often.

Most of these circles and traditions are very averse to massmedia so you won't find too much about them online, but here's a clip of a random frat guy drinking a Karaffe as a sort of ice bucket challenge thing

I'm not huge on much of Flying Monkeys canned stuff. I live walking distance from their brewery, so I get to try all the one-offs, and they're usually top notch - maybe they're just too expensive to mass produce? The missus loves the 12 Minutes, which... of course she does. I made her an abortion - a blackberry mosaic-hop weizen-neipa... enough flaked rice to bring the thickness of it down a bit, 1oz of mosaic added late so it's not super bitter, more grapefruit-passionfruit. The thing tastes like a malted fruit salad. I need her to finish up a few more so I can bottle up my 19SRM, 19Plato CoViDunkel? Pestbier? Pale German Porter?
