13864687 No.13864687 [Reply] [Original]

Ramen is a thing of beauty, taut noodles in a steaming rich broth, ready for instant consumption.

Yet devouring a bowl of ramen can be ... daunting. Few foods inspire such a cultlike following, and yet it is kind of unwieldy to eat. Do you slurp up the long noodles, or attempt to "cut" them up with your chopsticks? Do you copy the guy that picked up his bowl and drank from it, or has he just never been to a restaurant before?

How else are you supposed to drink the broth?

People who were raised in chopstick wielding nations eat like pigs. They slurp, they raise the bowl to their mouths. It is unmannerly and inconsiderate. You will do none of these things if you are a gentleman. You raise the noodles to your mouth with your chopsticks, clamp them with your teeth, then lower the chopsticks to grasp more of the noodles, raise that segment to your mouth, and repeat the process until you have successfully inserted all of the noodles into your mouth without making any audible noise. When you want to consume the broth, use the spoon. The spoons they provide are even better than Western soup spoons for handling liquid, so there should be no trouble there.

I crunch the bags up as much as possible and use a spoon to eat it. Or I drain the juice and add some butter. But always ALWAYS ad a couple eggs.

I've been cooking and eating ramen since I was about 6. Had to learn at a young age to make my own food with my mom working two jobs sometimes 3 to make ends meet, so I have to be in the mood to eat ramen. With that said...

I usually cook two packages at a time and like to mix up the flavors. I don't mind the chicken ramen as long as I have another package of a different flavor, preferably shrimp or beef. I miss the oriental flavor. Their new bullshit soy flavor is whatever, but it's not the same as oriental.

As for cooking preparation. I like to break up one package into four separate squares of noodles, and the other package gets broken up to little bits. I never put the full second package in with the first(it helps the 2 flavor packs to mix in better with a little less noodle than called for) and like to use only the minimum amount of water it takes to get them cooked. Always let water boil first before you put the ramen in and put the seasoning in right after. It makes the flavors fuse better with the ramen itself.

I'm a weirdo and like to put chilli and paprika powder in with whatever ramen flavor I use, unless I'm already using a spicy ramen flavor. Every so often I'll put parmesan cheese just for a top layer of crust. As I said I'm a weirdo, but isn't bad.

You're right that ramen is just the Japanese way of saying lamian. Japs always turn L --> R and IA --> E. That's why they say "ten" instead of "tian" (heaven). But that makes ramen a Japanese bastardisation of lamian. English isn't bastardising the same word at all, wtf.
