no one should use icky raw onion in hotdish when there's a perfectly fine substitute.

>> No.13838198

You could improve this greatly by replacing the canned mushroom soup with bechamel and toasted mushrooms, the cream of chicken with some fresh brown sauce (why the fuck are they using chicken broth based soup in a beef dish?)
And replace the soggy tater tot mess with fresh fried crispy hash browns and the pepper jack with some sharp cheddar.

true, but i feel as if that sort of misses the point of something lazy enough to be called "hot dish"

Recipe looks similar to what I grew up with, the only differences being cream of onion and cheddar cheese soups and no extra cheese on top. It's fuckin mint.

It's almost identical to a tater tot casserole recipe dating back to my grandmother in the 1960s. Not thinking it's anything original, but just saying I've heard it by other names for years (cheeseburger casserole)

pic related a semi-recent done by me.

I actually had it for the first time this winter, friend made it after a day skiing. It was good, nothing more than exactly what you'd expect. Veggies, meat, starch, cheese. It's just American shepherd's pie with tots replacing that mashed 'atoes

>that perfectly thicc midwestern transfer student who invited you in to make hotdish with her
Happened every month or so while we were walking home from high school together. I'm sure she's activated American Mode by now, but GODS was i strong then
Her recipe used cheddar and had chopped bell pepper sauteed with the onions, but was otherwise similar. Might be rose-tinted glasses, but i miss the hot dish. And her.
