13635142 No.13635142 [Reply] [Original]

Lent begins on 26th of February, and during these 40 days that precede Easter many of us, Catholics, don't eat meat, just fish. I think the Orthodox also do that, but I'm not sure.

Can anyone share recipes that don't involve meat so I don't get too bored eating the same things day after day? Thanks.

You're not required to eat fish dumbass, it's just that back in olden times fish was considered to be for poor people. In modern times actually eating fish is antithetical to the spirit of lent. You should be eating vegetable proteins. Succotash, moros y cristianos, that sort of thing.

Pope Francis should really make a statement on this clarifying the matter, it's ridiculous to see wealthy suburban catholics stocking up on sable and dover sole and beluga caviar to observe a time of repentance and sacrifice.

Usually wild caught and farmed Atlantic salmon go on deep sales. I like to ask the fish monger to remove the scales and then I blacken it. I get the skin nice and crispy. I usually use a pre-mixed blackening seasoning. Very tasty.

However, >>13635154 does have a point. I also eat a lot of lentils prepared in various ways.

I know. I was mostly asking for recipe ideas with no meat. During Lent I eat fish sparingly, mostly because it's expensive.

So any vegetarian recipes are welcomed.

Orthodox fasting rules are much more stringent, it's a completely vegan fast (even without any cooking oil on some days), occuring every wednesday and friday of the year (unless one of those wednesdays or fridays are a feast day) plus all of lent, all of advent and tons others. It used to be like that in Catholicism too before a pope cucked out and made the rules severely lax. Sad!

The Orthodox fast for the majority of lent (some days are an exception) is no meat, dairy, wine/alcohol, or oil. So if the is a bit more strict than how the Roman Catholics keep it.

OP, your best bet will be to look into Greek or Russian recipes specifically for lent. Though I will say that being "bored" is kind of the point of fasting, so it's not necessarily something to avoid.

Canon Law requires abstention from all meats other than fish. Only on Holy Friday we are required to forgo oil, milk, fats, etc. and to fast more severely.

Last Lent I gave up going to the internet throughout Fridays, but I haven't decided which is going to be my penance this incoming season. Maybe all sweets or something like that.

For Friday, I recommend a soup with beans or lentils. You can soften the vegetables with a splash of vegetable broth instead of oil, but be sure to use a stainless steel pan or something else that's easy to clean residue off of just in case.

Fish is meat. Meat is the flesh of (once) living beings. You've been breaking your beliefs this entire time, never mind the fact that nothing in your catholic religion nor your bible says ANYTHING about not eating meat in the first place.

Reading too much into it. If Jesus can wander the desert for 40 days than you can give up a little something in your quest to be more Christ like. They don't include this in the 10 commandments because it's not an eternal damnation thing. It's just a nice and good thing to do. Get over yourself, you're not that woke, you're just misinterpreting things so you can have something to critique.

That and fish don't have a semblance of consciousness, so they don't count. Don't read too much into it.

Jesus fasted for 40 days. We humbly follow on his footsteps in an attempt to become closer to Him and to reflect on His great gift to us. These are the types of traditions that kept Western civilization together. They are now mostly forgotten. Can you see how bad it is around you?

That's a good point. I guess you'd have to ask a religious official if that was permissible. I'd think if nuts are okay, coconut milk should be, but I'm not an expert on the matter.
This is a recipe for soup where the slow cooker version has no oil. You could probably imitate this on the stovetop. https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/lemony-lentil-soup/
There are probably lots of recipes you can make without oil. It'll be less delicious, but that's kind of the point.

You not eating steak during lent doesn't help anyone. It doesn't make you a better person, it doesn't make the world a better place, it has no quantifiable benefit. So Roman Caths should be more like ByzCaths and Maronites?
My family are divided mostly among those latter two groups and all the old and ancient members of the family eat wholly vegetarian or vegan during lent, EXCEPT on Fridays, where fish is permissible, but by no means required.
They also don't eat while the sun is out. Seriously, ByzCaths and Maronites are as crazy as Mohammedans when it comes to fasting rules. My grandmother used to wake up before dawn so she could have breakfast without feeling like she's disappointed the baby Jesus.

You sound like a sniveling child, and argue like one too. No one claimed it would house the homeless or any of your other strawman bullshit, retard. People abstain from things to show they're not mindless consoomers and have some semblance of a will. If you can't understand this, or realize it without someone spoon feeding you like I am now you are not above cattle tier sentience, and haven't done very much self reflection, if any at all. Try it yourself, exercise your will if you are so confident in your abilities. 40 days missing a luxury in your life, and see how you fare.
