Would buying and eating solely MREs be an effective and efficient way of cutting costs on food while also getting a full day's nutrients? If not, would camping foods suffice? If not, then how are some really cheap ways to get a full day's nutrition and vitamins?

Apart from puncturing sealed packages to "draw out the air" being a bad idea, these contain all the same kind of excessive salt/sugar/fat products that you get in regular MREs (though without the retort pouch entrees). Basically, the kind of stuff you shouldn't eat nothing but for more than a couple weeks if you also value your health. There's a reason why almost all militaries have policies on how long soldiers should be on prepackaged rations.

If you wanna live cheaply and get in all the nutrients you need, buy dried beans, lentils and rice. Maybe make some beef jerky to make you not go insane. Add a multivitamin on top and voila.

Rice sides aren't ready to eat either. How the fuck do you cook a side of rice like that in the field without burning the shit out of yourself or having a conventional stove? This is camping food for larpers, not even close to an MRE.

MREs have a lot of chemicals in them to preserve the foods. Even though you CAN survive on them long term, you probably shouldn't. I imagine the sodium content alone wouldn't be worth it.

If you're poor and looking for foods that you can eat or buy in bulk to stretch out long amounts of time/poverty - you should look into buying bulk bags of rice and beans. Eggs are another cheap one. Pasta noodles are cheap. Canned vegetables, especially the generic kind are also within budget reason.

If you need food assistance, you can google food banks and shelters within your area. It's free food, usually donated before it goes bad (like baked breads and shit) and you don't have to do anything other than show up and take it. This way, you can have some variety and help padding out your food budget.

Good luck, OP.

It's a space saving measure. Obviously it would lessen the shelf life but if you aren't aiming for long term storage it's not a bad idea

>> No.13624854

I think his main point was that you're literally going through the time and effort putting a shelf-stable packaged food product inside another package.
>>13624835
I think if you're worried about storage space, you're probably thinking about it for the long term. The difference in volume is absolutely minimal.

Except it's not "air", it's mostly nitrogen gas meant to keep to product shelf-stable as well as reduce the chance of damage during transport. Why are you vacuum sealing something that's already sealed and shelf-stable?

You need about 3 litres of water a day (about 80% of a gallon).
So over a year you'd need 1,095 litres or 290 gallons. So about 75 of the 15L large water cooler jugs or 30 super large 10 gallon/35 litre drums.

>> No.13625128

3 litres is an overestimate for people who don't engage in consistent amounts of strenuous activity or live in warmer climates. Saying something like "you should be drinking X amount of water" is just generalization and ignorance. You could need 3 litres, but many people don't.

>> No.13625143

>Today, the NAM recommends letting thirst guide your water consumption habits but set an even higher volume of total daily water intake: 3.7 liters (15 cups) for the average adult male and 2.7 liters (11 cups) for the average adult female

If you're using the term need in the strictest sense, sure. You could get by on a lot less, circumstance permitting.

>> No.13625158

>>13625143
>U.S. National Academy of Medicine (NAM) publication, which presented dietary reference intakes for water, included a lengthy review of water balance studies and water needs (i.e., using the stable isotope of water D2O) of children and adults. However, this report concluded that: (a) individual water requirements can vary greatly on a day-to-day basis because of differences in physical activity, climates, and dietary contents; and (b) there is no single daily water requirement for a given person.
>Despite numerous efforts to define a state of euhydration and determine the daily water requirements of children, men, women, and older adults, no empirical research provides definitive answers and no universal consensus exists. The dynamic complexity of the water regulatory network, and inter-individual differences, are the primary reasons why widespread consensus regarding the daily water requirements has not been reached to this date.
