Alright /c/ucks I'm posting here instead of /k/ so guide me a little. Me and my family have agreed to start stocking up food because of the recent winnie the flu shelter. Is there any guide on how to go about picking the right tins?

If you hunt/fish and have a vegetable garden or fruit trees, you are de facto forced into food preservation. Drying, curing, canning are best for electricity free preservation. If you live in an area with realistic electricity disruptions (snow storms, wind events like tornadoes and hurricanes, or rolling blackouts like in california), you should do this.

If you have the space, look up your city's policy on rainwater storage and conservation. Some cities restrict the amount you can collect, or require you to register your barrels/tanks. I think where I am, you can collect up to 200L before the Water Conservation Board gets involved. Once you have your water collectors set up, look into stockpiling filters and setting up a solar still.
With a water supply, you can look at sources of self-stable dried foods. Powdered milk is a good source of protein and is usually supplemented with vitamins, though it has a sort of "toasty" taste unlike regular milk. You can also get other powdered drinks that have added vitamins and minerals, too. Basically, stuff you'd find in an MRE, but cheaper.

Generally I just buy what's on sale. The better the sale, the more I buy.
You'll eventually buy more than you consume.
So if you have canned corn, you place the new corn in the back, and when you want corn, you pick the oldest that's up front. That way you don't really have to worry about foot spoiling if you do a proper rotation.

You can go into hardcore prepping, but honestly I don't see this new Chinese flu being the one that ends us. It looks like just another swine flu/sars bump.

Its a vulnerability reminder that shit can go south real fast because the supermarkets in HUWAN went empty pretty fast and with all the city exits now sealed off there's high chance that food will go scarce.
