I've had a really crappy 4 plate gas cooker that needs to be taken out back and shot.
But i haven't got any clue about if i should stick to gas or go for electric.
What do you guys think?

No he's right unless it's wired for a 220 socket where you want to place the range you'll have to call in electricians to do that.

Electric oven gas range would be ideal for me. My electric range has heat settings from 1-9 and anything above 5 is unusable. The oven is nice though. I like how the dry heat gets things crisp.

what reasons are there for gas being better?

I like the smell of a gas stove. I'll just leave it on for awhile without any flames and turn it off when the room smells of it

patrician choice, expanding on your point gas cooktop also alows you to burn of alcohol in sauces, but its annoying to clean

i will reply to this because i can actually relate
i've woken up twice to the smell of gas since my boomer dad installed a gas line and bought a gas stove
if it were up to me, i would never have gas in my house. i don't care how inefficient electric or induction may be, at least my house won't blow up
if i want a restaurant experience, i'll go to work

brit bong detected so probably has 220 in the kitchen.
Personally a gas stove top and electric oven would be my choice. I like the controllable burners of gas and the dry stable heat of an electric oven.

I only have gas, and no 220 outlet in my kitchen.

Gas stove, electric oven. Only option.
