Diners are very prevalent, delis are very, very rare.
Flyover grocery stores tend to function as the 'deli', and many of the larger chains have an eating area as well. Not as good as Katz's but NYC delis are a meme at this point. I thought the 'real' neighborhood Deli was dead and it's all tourist spots now.

The only Deli I'm aware of in Michigan outside of Detroit (don't know Detroit) is Zingerman's in A2, it's a NYC Jewish Deli for NYC people going to school a UMich. It's a fantastic deli but at the end of the day, it's an actual knockoff.
There are not many Italians where I live so I guess we have no delis.

The east coast is literally all diners delis and bars. My town has 4 diners, 5 delis, 4 burger joints, several bars, a brewery, and I think we just opened a chicken in a waffle cone joint, shit ton of pizza places, and a hand full of things like kfc/popeyes. Food in Australian country towns has never disappointed me. It seems to be that if the food is even slightly mediocre, that a restaurant is not financially viable. From there you just apply the rule of most customers = best restaurant (which always works since everyone in a country town has tried the food at every establishment) and you'll always do extremely well.
Plus there are perks to being in the country, like direct from farm ingredients and unpasteurised beer.
